Vehicle Test & Mapping Operator
Location: Austin, TX
Pay Rate: $20/hr (W2)
Duration: 3+ months (extension possible)
Base Pay Range: $20.00/hr - $21.00/hr
Job Description: The role requires an active MVR and NDA. The labs operations team is responsible for mapping the Greater Austin area using a dedicated mapping vehicle. Team members operate on a 4x10 schedule (four 10-hour shifts per week) and are expected to complete mapping tickets accurately, efficiently, and on time while maintaining strict adherence to all road safety protocols.
- Rebuilding a specialized team of four high-performing individuals who generate high-quality mapping data and support broader operational goals.
- Team members work from the mapping vehicle at all times. Vehicles are picked up from the Austin Operations HUB, and any vehicle issues are handled through the HUB service team. If a vehicle is out of service, candidates must be willing to report to any Texas labs location to support operational needs.
- Safely operate test vehicles across various environments, road types, and weather conditions while following all traffic laws.
- Follow detailed instructions to prepare vehicles and components for testing; collaborate with operators and engineers to execute test plans.
- Maintain strong focus on test objectives and communicate clearly to ensure safe, efficient, and accurate execution.
- Perform multiple driving tasks, including route-based driving, engineering test drives, and transport/delivery driving.
- Produce accurate, detailed, and comprehensive test reports.
- Support test activities using engineering principles, analysis tools, and best practices to meet performance and quality standards.
- Travel to test sites, customer locations, and public roads, including environments with challenging or extreme conditions.
- Coordinate logistics for testing activities (e.g., location readiness, tool availability, and resource planning).
- Conduct quality assurance checks to evaluate functionality, performance, drivability, and user experience.
- Drive safely during daylight, nighttime, and adverse weather or road conditions while completing all tasks within set timelines.
- Work independently and collaboratively with in-vehicle partners (passenger operators).
- Adhere strictly to security protocols for test vehicles and immediately report security concerns to the drive supervisor.
- Assist with broader operational tasks as needed, including equipment movement, general operations support, and uploading data disks.
- 1–2 years of experience in the technology industry or a strong demonstrated interest in the field.
- Proficiency with ticketing and workflow tools (e.g., JIRA) for collecting feedback, scheduling fixes, and tracking progress.
- Strong organizational skills with the ability to follow structured schedules; must be willing to work evenings and weekends as required.
- High level of comfort with technology and ability to troubleshoot basic issues.
- Strong interest in autonomy, mapping, and emerging technology spaces.
