Staff Attorney – Community College Services
Texas Association of School Boards is seeking a Staff Attorney to provide legal services to Texas public community colleges. The position involves advising board members and administrators, drafting policies, delivering training, and providing a range of legal services.
Base pay range: $84,050 per year – $134,275 per year. Highly qualified candidates can earn between $100,000 and $130,000 per year. This position is hybrid; successful candidates will work at least three days a week at our North Austin headquarters, with some travel required.
Responsibilities- Develop and maintain a comprehensive knowledge of community college law, policy, and best practices; monitor state and federal case law and regulatory changes.
- Exercise good judgment and high discretion in providing guidance on legal and policy issues, including preparing educational materials and training.
- Collaborate with the TASB team and other divisions to expand services for community colleges.
- Respond to legal inquiries by telephone and provide independent legal advice based on general knowledge of community college law.
- Develop legal reference policies and model local policies; review and edit members’ policies when appropriate.
- Serve as a legal resource to other TASB divisions on higher‑education matters; assist with review of publications and communications.
- Design and deliver legal and governance training programs tailored to community college needs.
- Provide bill analysis during and after legislative sessions, including post‑legislative update resources and training.
- Research and draft legal resource materials, including eLaw resources, newsletters, and other publications.
- Promote TASB services to community colleges through media and outreach materials.
- Participate in required professional development, keep a Texas law license in good standing, and adhere to Texas Disciplinary Rules of Professional Conduct.
Education and Experience
- Graduation from an accredited law school.
- Texas law license in good standing.
- Experience in community college law or a related area preferred.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Accurate legal analysis and writing.
- Thorough legal research.
- Judicious, courteous, and confidential client counseling.
- Sound independent judgment aligned with division standards.
- Ability to communicate complex information to diverse audiences via phone, in person, and in writing.
- Ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines with minimal supervision and collaborate with staff on specific projects.
- Working knowledge of Microsoft Office and ability to learn new computer applications.
