Overview

Our Client, who's runs a mid-sized CPA and Financial Advisory firm located in Austin, TX, is seeking an experienced and dynamic Tax Partner to lead their tax practice. The ideal candidate will have extensive expertise in tax planning, compliance, and advisory services, with a proven track record of serving high-net-worth individuals, closely held businesses, and complex entities. This role requires strategic leadership, technical proficiency, and a client-centric approach to drive growth, mentor teams, and deliver innovative tax solutions.

Key Responsibilities
  • Tax Strategy and Planning
    :
    Develop and implement sophisticated tax strategies, including income, estate, and gift tax minimization, for high-net-worth clients and businesses across industries such as manufacturing, real estate, and professional services.

  • Client Advisory
    :
    Serve as the primary trusted advisor for clients, providing integrated guidance on business, personal, and estate planning to optimize financial outcomes and achieve long-term goals.

  • Practice Leadership
    :
    Oversee the tax practice, managing a $1M+ book of business, driving revenue growth, and ensuring high-quality service delivery. Establish and maintain a client-first culture.

  • Team Management
    :
    Lead, mentor, and develop a team of tax professionals, fostering a high-performance environment with rigorous technical standards and minimal rework.

  • Business Development
    :
    Expand the client base through organic growth, referrals, and strategic networking. Increase average engagement fees by demonstrating value and redefining service scope.

  • IRS and State Representation
    :
    Lead complex IRS and state tax audits, securing favorable outcomes for clients through robust representation and negotiation.

  • Technical Expertise
    :
    Maintain deep knowledge of tax code sections (e.g., §263A, §743, §754, §709) and advanced structures like charitable trusts, partnerships, and valuation discounts. Stay ahead of legislative changes to adapt strategies proactively.

  • Revenue and P&L Management
    :
    Take full profit-and-loss responsibility for the tax practice, optimizing revenue mix (e.g., 60–70% tax compliance/planning, 30–40% consulting) and enhancing profitability.

  • Specialized Engagements
    :
    Structure high-value transactions, such as business sales, estate plans, and partnership buyouts, achieving significant tax savings through innovative approaches.

  • Compliance and Consulting
    :
    Oversee preparation of complex corporate, LLC, and individual tax returns while providing consulting services, including investment due diligence and litigation support.

Qualifications
  • Experience
    :
    Minimum of 15–20 years in public accounting, with at least 5 years in a leadership role managing a significant client portfolio and professional team.

  • Technical Skills
    :
    Expertise in tax-efficient structures (e.g., Family Limited Partnerships, Charitable LLCs, Delaware Statutory Trusts), estate and gift tax valuations, and IRS audit representation. Proficiency in tax code sections relevant to partnerships, capitalization, and elections.

  • Leadership
    :
    Proven ability to lead and mentor professional staff, drive revenue growth, and manage P&L for a tax practice or office.

  • Client Management
    :
    Demonstrated success in building and retaining a loyal client base, particularly high-net-worth individuals and businesses with $700K–$5M AGI.

  • Business Acumen
    :
    Ability to grow revenue through strategic pricing, scope management, and value-driven advisory services. Experience increasing average engagement fees and implementing proactive tax-planning contracts.

  • Education and Credentials
    :
    Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or related field;
    Master’s in Taxation or Accounting preferred. Licensed CPA required.

  • Professional Affiliations
    :
    Membership in the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA) or similar organizations preferred.

  • Communication
    :
    Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills to serve as a trusted advisor and foster strong client relationships.
