Job Summary
The Registered Nurse (RN) Unit PRN is a licensed professional who uses the BSWH nursing professional practice model to coordinate patient care delivery by the health care team. Using the nursing process, the RN assesses the patient, identifies nursing diagnoses based on responses to health problems, develops and implements an individualized plan of care, and evaluates the patient's response. The RN promotes safe passage for their patients by using knowledge of patient needs and the healthcare environment to assist patients to transition through the healthcare encounter without any preventable complications or delays.
The RN delegates interventions to health care personnel based on the Texas Nursing Practice Act, each patient's condition, and the competencies of the employee.
The Role
- Clinical Judgment: conduct accurate clinical assessments, identify and prioritize patient and family needs, and evaluate the nursing plan of care.
- Clinical Inquiry: evaluate the quality and effectiveness of nursing practice, support evidence‑based practice changes, and participate in quality/performance improvement initiatives.
- Caring Practices: create a compassionate, supportive, safe and therapeutic environment for patients, families and staff and manage both emotional and physical pain.
- Response to Diversity: recognize, appreciate and incorporate a patient’s and family’s unique differences into an individualized plan of care.
- Advocacy and Moral Agency: protect confidentiality, autonomy, dignity and rights of patients and families; identify and resolve ethical and clinical concerns.
- Facilitation of Learning: facilitate learning for patients and families, nursing staff and other members of the health care team, and integrate education throughout the continuum of care.
- Collaboration:
work collaboratively with colleagues and community to develop and implement an integrated plan of care; delegate tasks and ensure timely follow‑up. - Systems Thinking: use strategies and available resources for problem‑solving for patients, families and staff; consider safety, effectiveness and efficiency in planning and delivery.
- Professionalism: participate in shared governance and decision‑making processes, staffing, professional growth, and community service.
- Knowledge of nursing and patient care standards, laws, rules and regulations, and hospital/unit protocols.
- Knowledge of medical terminology, health promotion, risk reduction, illness and disease prevention, medications, and adverse reactions.
- Knowledge of medical and professional nursing ethics and patient privacy rights.
- Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written.
- Interpersonal skills to interact with a wide range of constituencies.
- Critical thinking and problem‑solving skills.
- Observation and communication of changes in the medical condition of patients.
- Ability to provide age‑specific, quality, patient‑centered care using the nursing process with sensitivity and respect for diversity.
- General computer skills including Microsoft Office, information security, scheduling and payroll systems, electronic medical documentation, and email.

Graduate of an accredited nursing program or 2 years of work experience above the minimum qualification. - Major:
