Provide skilled landscaping work to maintain the health and appearance of The University of Texas at Austin campus landscape.
Responsibilities- Supervises a crew of gardeners and groundskeepers in the performance of landscaping tasks.
- Maintains landscape to university standards by safely operating landscape equipment including power mowers, string trimmers, blowers, and other tools used in landscape tasks.
- Ensures the timely completion of written and oral instructions, assigns work to the crew, completes routine paperwork including performance evaluations, enters reports electronically, and ensures the accuracy of employee attendance records.
- Wears appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) for the task, ensures crew members follow safety rules, reports unsafe conditions, and maintains safe conditions for the crew and university community.
- Applies mulch, soil amendments, fertilizers and pesticides, and irrigation to the landscape as instructed.
- Cleans, maintains, operates university vehicles and equipment, and maintains acceptable driver rating as established in policy.
- Safely operates landscaping equipment and vehicles.
- Ability to pull, push, and lift up to 50 lbs. Works with other departments as needed; occasional overtime may be required to support organizational goals.
- High school graduation or GED.
- Four years of experience in landscape maintenance or construction.
- One year experience in a supervisory capacity.
- Experience in care of plants, flowers, shrubs, trees and lawns.
- Experience using power equipment and hand tools used in gardening work.
- Ability to communicate effectively.
- Ability to pull, push, and lift up to 50 lbs.
- Capable of working in all types of adverse conditions (weather, dust, noise, heights, fumes).
- Stable work history. Ability to perform basic computer operations.
- Current Class C Operator Driver License required.
- Prior to date of hire, provide a Motor Vehicle Report (MVR) showing driving history for the past 36 months; MVR will be evaluated to determine eligibility to drive a University-owned vehicle. If not a Texas resident, must obtain a Texas Driver License within 30 days of becoming a Texas resident.
- Relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate.
- Associate's degree or coursework in horticulture or related field.
- Technical training in landscaping or horticulture, including organic management concepts.
- Knowledge of native plants in the landscape and practical application in day-to-day operations.
- Understanding of riparian zone function and restoration, including invasive species management.
- Experience with battery-powered landscape equipment.
- More than four years of landscaping care in institutional or commercial settings.
- More than four years of experience using landscaping equipment.
- More than one year of supervisory experience.
- Pesticide Applicators License issued by the Texas Department of Agriculture.
- Driving:
Class C operator’s license; submit a current 3-year driving record if requested. - Background checks for finalists; equal employment opportunity and anti-discrimination policies apply.
- Pay range: $42,848+ depending on qualifications.
- Work shift:
Monday – Friday, 6:00 am – 2:30 pm. - Uniforms or PPE; all-weather conditions; exposure to chemicals, fumes, dust, and environmental hazards.
