On-Call Certified Animal Safety Representative (Austin, TX)
We are currently hiring on a rolling basis for our next training class with a preference for candidates located in/around listed areas.
Job SummaryResponsible for representing American Humane Hollywood’s "No Animals Were Harmed®" program on motion picture, television, commercial, and new media locations. Ensure humane treatment of animal performers, document housing and care, and advise on animal safety issues while upholding AH’s Guidelines for the Safe Use of Animals in Filmed Media. Work includes contact with animal trainers, production staff, and, occasionally, the media.
Responsibilitiesand Duties
- Monitoring Animal Action in Filmed Media
- Educate film personnel in humane matters and ensure safety and welfare of animals involved; assist with animals performing in the film
- Report Writing: timely, detailed reports documenting animal action, safety measures, and welfare considerations to support AH certification and review processes
- Communication and Diplomacy: liaise with producers, directors, assistant directors, special effects, pyrotechnics, firefighters, wranglers, trainers, veterinarians, and local agencies as needed
- Location of Work Assignments: operate locally and across regions; travel may be required; some assignments may be short-notice and long in duration; on-set conditions may vary
- Research: gain knowledge of animal species scheduled to perform; consult scheduling as needed for species-specific requirements
- Adhere to confidential and production-related documentation and processes
- Must have one or more of the following qualifications:
- Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM)
- Registered/Licensed/Certified Veterinary Technician (RVT/LVT/CVT)
- B.S. in Animal Science or related field from an accredited school, or equivalent combination of experience and education
- Diversity of experience in animal health and behavior preferred
- Commitment to animal welfare
- Equine knowledge and experience preferred
- Broad knowledge of animals (horses to snakes, fish, dogs, birds, goats, cats)
- Excellent verbal and written communication; active listening
- Diplomacy and collaboration skills
- Knowledge of special effects and stunts involving animals preferred
- Ability to work without direct supervision in the field
- Detail-oriented and organized
- Excellent judgment and ability to analyze situations quickly
- Proficient in using computer for email and report writing
- Successful completion of the American Humane Society Certified Animal Safety Representative Training Course is required
Selected applicants must complete and pass the CASR training during a probationary period (~5 weeks).
The work environment primarily involves motion picture production settings, both indoors and outdoors, with travel to various locations. Requires ability to work outdoors in various weather conditions and to handle long production days (often 10–12 hours).
- Outdoor work in extreme conditions; ability to walk, climb, balance, and stand; occasional lifting of 10 kg or more
- Excellent vision at distance; valid driver’s license and own transportation to production locations
- Local, national, and/or international travel may be required on-call
- Production schedules may vary; on-call hours can be irregular
