Overview

TRC has an opening for a full-time Project Geoarchaeologist to report to our Austin, TX or Tulsa, OK office and work throughout our Southern Plains region.

This person will support large-scale and small-scale projects focusing on Texas, Oklahoma, Kansas, and New Mexico. We are looking for an individual that is enthusiastic about their work, yet also possesses a strong commitment to client service and technical excellence. The successful candidate will enjoy the challenges of working alongside others in a fast-paced environment and they will help to develop effective solutions to both expected and unexpected project challenges.

This position will require frequent travel away from the office.

  • Conduct geoarchaeological assessments during Phase I–III archaeological investigations.
  • Analyze sedimentary contexts, stratigraphy, and geomorphology to interpret site formation processes.
  • Direct field sampling strategies (e.g., soil cores, augering, profile recording) to evaluate site preservation and potential.
  • Write geoarchaeological components of technical reports, including strati graphic descriptions, profile illustrations, and interpretive syntheses.
  • Provide scientific support during agency consultation or review (e.g., SHPO, USACE, BLM).
  • Participate in meetings with clients, tribal representatives, or regulatory stakeholders as needed.
  • Assist with proposal writing, research design development, and scoping of geoarchaeological studies.
  • Help evaluate landscapes for their archaeological potential using both field and desktop methods (e.g., GIS, LiDAR, soils data).
  • Contribute to project planning and logistics for field deployments.
  • Direct all types of archaeological projects, ranging from small local surveys through large, multi-year and multi-state projects.
  • Handle planning, logistics, and supervision of fieldwork for projects as assigned and assist with report writing, under the direction of the Principal Investigator.
Qualifications

Qualifications

  • A Masters degree in Anthropology is required
  • Demonstrated coursework in soils, sedimentology, and geomorphology
  • Experience contributing geoarchaeological components to CRM projects (Phase I–III) and technical reports
  • 2-5 years of experience in all aspects of archaeological fieldwork with supervisory experience
  • Some familiarity with digital field technology (GPS units, tablets, cameras)
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • A commitment to safety
  • Ability to accomplish tasks in a timely manner, with a track record of meeting deadlines
  • Excellent interpersonal and management skills
  • The ability to work well on a team and individually
  • Basic knowledge of Section 106 and state and federal regulations and environmental review processes and requirements
  • Experience in the archeology of Texas and Oklahoma and the surrounding region, preferred
  • A valid driver's license with a clean driving record
  • Successful completion of a background check and drug screen
