Job Overview

Under general supervision of the Environmental Microbiology Branch Manager, and in coordination with the Media Preparation Team Lead, the Microbiologist II performs moderately complex procedures for media production, assists with logistical and technical matters, and supports team training and equipment evaluation.

Essential Job Functions
  • EJF 1: Perform all phases of media preparation according to FDA, CAP, CLIA, ISO 17025, EPA, TNI and DSHS protocols; procure reagents and equipment; mix and sterilize media; monitor pH and labeling; maintain inventory using WASP; document lot numbers and preparation dates. (40%)
  • EJF 2: Monitor quality of heat and filter sterilized media, support sterilization processes, troubleshoot QC and equipment failures, and conduct special projects to improve production performance. (25%)
  • EJF 3: Conduct preventive maintenance on autoclaves, hoods, freezers, water baths, pH meters, balances, and label machines; document performance and submit work orders; prepare reports using word processing, spreadsheets, and database applications. (15%)
  • EJF 4: Train team members on safety, protocols, and new procedures; assess competency and report results to the Team Lead. (10%)
  • EJF 5: Assist with implementation and evaluation of new media recipes, procedures, and equipment; present project updates; support special projects; participate in weekend and holiday rotations; comply with laboratory guidelines and disaster response duties. (10%)
Qualifications
  • Experience working in research, clinical, environmental, or media production laboratory (required).
  • Prefer a bachelor’s, master’s, or doctoral degree in chemical, physical, biological, or clinical laboratory science, or an earned associate’s degree in a related field (preferred).
  • Experience with all phases of media preparation (preferred).
  • Experience in a team setting providing customer service (preferred).
  • Maintenance of glassware and inventory in a laboratory (preferred).
  • Experience with spreadsheet or database programs (preferred).
  • Experience with ISO-accredited or federally regulated laboratory (preferred).
  • Willingness to work weekends, holidays, and non-standard hours in a rotational basis.
Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities
  • Thorough knowledge of microbiological and chemical principles and techniques for media and reagent production.
  • Ability to maintain current inventory and communicate effectively orally and in writing.
  • Skill in operating laboratory equipment such as autoclaves, balances, pH meters, and glassware washers.
  • Proficiency with word processing, spreadsheets, and database analysis.
  • Capacity to work independently, manage multiple priorities, and make technical decisions based on data review.
  • Ability to develop, follow, and improve standard operating procedures and protocols.
