Utilities and Energy Management (UEM) provides reliable and cost‑effective electricity, chilled water, steam, deionized water, compressed air, emergency power, and elevator services for The University of Texas  has over 170 employees in five divisions:

Responsibilities
  • Assist installation, maintenance, and repair of plant equipment and utility systems, including welding per ASME and AWS standards.
  • Perform preventive or corrective maintenance on mechanical, electrical, or utility tunnel distribution systems following established procedures.
  • Fabricate and install insulation systems according to specifications, wear respiratory protection as required and work safely around hazardous materials.
  • Maintain records of equipment repair and coordinate with trades or utility personnel in power plant, chilling stations, or underground utilities.
  • Report unusual conditions, problems, or deficiencies to appropriate personnel and complete work orders via automated systems.
  • Clean and maintain all equipment and work areas, identifying and correcting safety hazards.
  • Operate cranes, forklifts, and personnel lifts; erect, use, and dismantle scaffolding as needed.
  • Attend job‑related training, complete training modules, and obtain required certifications within 18 months.
  • Paint plant equipment following manufacturer recommendations.
  • Perform other related functions as assigned, including staff and safety training meetings.
Required Qualifications
  • High school graduation or GED and four years of related experience.
  • Mechanically inclined individual interested in training to repair and maintain electrical, industrial, mechanical, or utility distribution equipment.
Preferred Qualifications
  • More than three years of skilled experience in repair and maintenance of industrial plant mechanical, electrical, or utility equipment.
  • Experience maintaining power plant or similar industrial/utility equipment.
  • Journey‑level experience in industrial insulation, including fabrication of insulating blankets and asbestos abatement.
  • Welding certification per ASME and industry codes.
  • Experience as a machinist—fabricating, modifying, and repairing pump, turbine, and boiler parts.
  • Experience in a university plant or utility environment.
  • Experience using a work order system.
  • Demonstrated teamwork and interpersonal communication skills.
Physical & Working Conditions
  • Use of personal computer and keyboard.
  • Fine manual dexterity, frequent lifting up to 78 lbs., twisting, pushing, pulling, and bending.
  • Work from ladders, scaffolds, elevated platforms, and confined spaces.
  • Potential exposure to heat, chemicals, asbestos, electrical and mechanical hazards, biohazards, and extreme temperatures.
  • May work nights, weekends, holidays, and in all weather conditions.
