Performs skilled journey plumber‑level licensed work in the installation, maintenance and repair of plumbing systems. Installs new and repairs existing systems, develops and maintains preventive maintenance schedules and performs specialized tests under the general oversight of a licensed Master Plumber.
Distinguishing CharacteristicsThis is the first in a series of two plumber‑related job classifications within the Skilled Trades family. The classification requires a journey plumber license, additional experience, and the ability to perform skilled journeyman‑level plumbing work. A flexible work schedule may be required.
- Installs new plumbing systems and repairs existing ones. Makes recommendations for replacement or upgrade.
- Plans and develops routine preventive maintenance schedules. Responds to service requests.
- Researches and estimates time and materials needed, records time and materials used, requests needed tools and supplies, and monitors expenditure and inventory.
- Obtains permits, as required, from regulatory agencies for new plumbing system construction.
- Performs preventive maintenance and required testing, including back‑flow prev enters.
- Performs other job‑related duties as assigned.
High School diploma or G.E.D. AND four (4) years experience in the installation and repair of plumbing fixtures and systems, such as gas, water, and steam systems;
OR any combination of education and experience that is equivalent to the stated requirements and that provides the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the duties and responsibilities.
Licenses, Registrations, Certifications, or Special Requirements- Journeyman Plumber License issued by the State of Texas.
- Valid Texas Driver’s License.
- Must pass a criminal background check for CJIS clearance.
- Must be able to work PM and overnight shifts as needed.
Knowledge of:
- Plumbing codes and related terminology, practices, and procedures.
- Standard plumbing maintenance and repair methods, materials, tools, and equipment.
- Computer equipment, including word processing, spreadsheets, databases, and various software packages.
- Business letter writing, grammar, punctuation, and report preparation.
Skill in:
- Operating and using standard plumbing tools and equipment.
- Installing and maintaining plumbing work.
- Reading and interpreting schematics and blueprints.
- Applying safety practices, procedures, and regulations.
- Collaborating with others on a team.
- Explaining complicated problems in simple, non‑technical language.
- Calculating estimates of time, labor, and material quantities.
- Both verbal and written communication.
Ability to:
- Understand and follow verbal and written instructions and communicate concisely.
- Work efficiently independently and as part of a team.
- Reason and make judgments and decisions.
- Manage time, perform multiple tasks, and organize diverse activities.
- Establish and maintain effective working relationships with departmental clientele, other county employees, officials, outside agencies, and the public.
Physical requirements include the ability to lift/carry up to 50 pounds, visual acuity, speech and hearing, hand and eye coordination, and manual dexterity necessary to operate a computer and office equipment. You will be required to stand, walk, sit, reach, climb stairs, bend, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, push, pull, drive, twist, balance, and work in cramped spaces for extended periods. Contact with hazardous waste, foul odors, animals, human fecal matter, insects, rodents, toxic substances, dust, fumes, smoke, loud noises, and high voltage is possible.
Work will occur indoors and outdoors in all weather conditions and may require working at heights on ladders and scaffolds.
Travis County employees play an important role in business continuity; therefore, employees can be assigned to business continuity efforts outside of normal job functions.
Work Hours: M‑F, 7 AM – 4 PM. May work some holidays, nights, and weekends.
