Senior Software Engineer

Modern Intelligence is building the foundational AI for defense. Over the next decade, the US military and our allies will significantly increase the number of sensors deployed on the battlefield. However, manual monitoring of sensor feeds is not scalable. Our product,
Cutlass
, is an automated targeting AI that detects, remembers, and shares targets in real time across various sensors and networks, providing modular, insightful knowledge of adversaries' locations.

We have raised over $12M from notable investors such as Bedrock, Vine, Contrary, and others. Our AI research enables Cutlass to learn targets with minimal data and compute, and it has been tested in multiple DOD exercises and is currently deployed in live missions.

We are seeking a Senior Software Engineer to lead the Cutlass software team. The ideal candidate will be an outstanding coder with strong design and leadership skills, capable of translating high-level requirements into detailed designs, leading execution, and interfacing effectively with technical and business teams.

As the Cutlass Software Lead, you will collaborate with our Director of Engineering, Machine Learning Lead, and Data Science Lead to shape the future of Cutlass, influence our tech stack, and help define Modern's engineering culture and growth trajectory.

This role requires the ability to obtain a DoD security clearance, work onsite to help establish our engineering culture, and travel domestically and internationally multiple times per quarter.

• Led a team of 3+ junior engineers on multi-quarter projects.
• Experienced in coaching and mentoring junior engineers on code quality, version control, testing, and software engineering best practices.
• Proficient in writing and reviewing design documents.
• Strong organizational, planning, and communication skills.
• Capable of obtaining a security clearance.

• Experience with Python.
• Experience with Docker or other OCI software.
• Experience with time-sensitive or safety-critical software systems.
• Experience interfacing Python with other languages (e.g., SWIG, Boost Python).
• Proficiency in compiled languages such as C, C++, or Rust.

• Experience with machine learning.
• Experience with ffmpeg or video transcoding.
• Experience with optics or applied mathematics.
• Experience with Python compilation tools like Nuitka.
• Experience with Multiprocess Python.
• Experience with Type Script, Node.js, LLVM.
• Security clearance.
