We are seeking an experienced IBM mainframe application programmer to support the Tax Processing section of the Information Technology division. Candidates should have at least three years of experience with Natural One, DB2, and batch (JCL) and online programming (CICS) on an IBM mainframe.
About the DivisionThe Tax Processing section manages the state’s major tax systems and supports a multi‑billion‑dollar operation. The Comptroller’s Office serves every Texas citizen as the state’s chief tax collector, accountant, and revenue estimator.
Work Hours8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday. Occasional evenings, weekends, or holidays and on‑call duties may be required.
TeleworkingTeleworking may be considered subject to meeting in‑office requirements as determined by the hiring section. Applicants must be permanent Texas residents.
QualificationsMinimum Qualifications
- Accredited four‑year bachelor’s degree.
- Three years of mainframe work programming in Natural language on an IBM mainframe.
- Three years of experience building Natural programs for CICS and batch environments, using TSO, JCL, and mainframe utilities.
- Experience on a large project.
- Computer science, Information Systems, or related degree.
- Experience with Natural One, AJAX for Natural, COBOL, DB2, SQL.
- Experience with the Integrated Tax System and Service Now.
- Experience developing APIs and working across multiple environments.
- Knowledge of Agile SDLC methodologies.
One additional year of experience may substitute for up to 30 semester hours of education, up to a maximum of 120 semester hours.
ResponsibilitiesIn this role you will:
- Gather information and code changes in Natural, JCL, and occasionally COBOL with embedded DB2 SQL.
- Prepare test data, conduct unit tests, and validate that new code meets specifications.
- Participate in code reviews and implement requested adjustments.
- Research new products, evaluate impacts, and document findings.
- Coordinate implementation activities with business customers and other teams.
- Modify job schedules, troubleshoot issues, and provide implementation feedback.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
