Work Schedule & Eligibility
  • Full‑time, nights: 7:00 pm – 7:30 am.
  • New graduates welcome to apply; must have a license (or obtain one before direct patient care).
Summary of Primary Function

The ED Registered Nurse (RN) provides, coordinates, plans, evaluates nursing care and supervises licensed and unlicensed associates in nursing care delivery within established procedures, standards, and policies.

Essential Job Functions
  • Conducts initial and ongoing patient assessment, analyzes assessment data, creates a plan of care, implements treatment, and evaluates treatment effectiveness in collaboration with the interdisciplinary team.
  • Administers medications in a safe manner consistent with state practice and Mercy Health policies and procedures.
  • Acts as point of contact for patient care coordination throughout hospital departments.
  • Advocates for patient safety by participating in quality improvement activities.
  • Manages the physical and emotional demands of emergency nursing care.
  • Applies knowledge of contemporary emergency nursing practice and future innovations.
  • Provides care to individuals across the lifespan with a variety of needs, from non‑urgent to life‑threatening conditions.
  • Collaborates with outside agencies (protective agencies, law enforcement, EMS, transfer centers, pharmacies) in coordinating care.
  • Recognizes that emergency nursing care is episodic, primary, short‑term, and occurs in varied settings.
  • BSMH nurses are expected to practice and deliver care in accordance with the core concepts and intentions of the BSMH Nursing Professional Practice Model.
Licensing / Certification
  • Current RN license in the state of practice or covered by a compact (required).
  • BLS Basic Life Support; ACLS Advanced Cardiac Life Support and PALS Pediatric Advanced Life Support (preferred at hire; ACLS and PALS required within 6 months of hire).
  • Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NPR) – preferred.
  • Trauma Nursing Core Course (TNCC) – preferred.
Education

Bachelor of Science in Nursing (preferred).
Associate level acceptable if other criteria are met.

Work Experience
  • Minimum 1 year of RN experience (required).
  • Recent Emergency Department or Critical Care experience (preferred).
Training
  • EPIC Electronic Health Record (EHR) training (preferred).

  • Assigns patient care based on staff skill, knowledge, and scope of practice.
  • Facilitates learning and provides education to staff and patients.
  • Possesses clinical knowledge and competency to provide evidence‑based care.
  • Performs comprehensive assessment of patient’s clinical condition and psychosocial needs.

  • Evaluates treatment effectiveness and revises plans accordingly.
  • Assists patients and families in coping with illness.
  • Collaborates with multidisciplinary teams for coordinated care.

  • Recognizes limitations, seeks assistance, and gathers information for safe practice.
