Background and Key Purpose of the Role

As the Court Usher, you act as the essential first point of contact for all court users during hearings. You will regularly interact with the judiciary and support administrative staff to ensure a smooth flow of court work. Your day will involve meeting members of the public and their legal representatives, preparing court/hearing rooms, documenting tasks, and ensuring efficient operations. General clerical work may also be required to support HMCTS.

You must be capable of reacting quickly and professionally to unexpected situations, with a sensitivity to people from all backgrounds, many of whom may be vulnerable and under stress. Assistance and support are available, and there is little discretion to deviate from standard procedures; you may need to assert a firm stance when procedures are not understood or welcomed.
