We have an immediate need for a Mechanical Design Engineer with experience using CATIA V5 & Windchill.
Role Details- Job purpose: To develop innovative mechanical design solutions for current and future aerospace industry challenges, on existing and next generation smart motor and power generation technologies.
- Lead and deliver project based engineering work‑package activities, by ensuring mature and robust mechanical solutions, designed to meet manufacturing, cost and weight targets.
- Primary responsibility: to create and support the definition of robust mechanical design solutions, for R&D / R&T project/s, by ensuring the designs are technically robust, fit for purpose and meet both the business and customer needs.
- Support and/or ownership of one or more Engineering Work Packages for the Mechanical Design of products.
- Interfacing with Mechanical Engineering, Stress & Thermal, Supply Chain, Industrialisation, Validation and Verification (V&V), Configuration and Quality.
- Responsibility for delivering engineering solutions that meet ‘Design to Cost’ and ‘Design to Manufacture/Assembly’ requirements, against programme deliverables.
- Improved awareness via regular reporting to the Lead Engineer/s (Principal and/or Senior Principal Engineers) on work package status.
- The production and maintenance of CAD models, drawings and parts lists compliant with all company standards.
- The production and reporting of Design Assurance documentation, including design reports, test procedures, Hand/Stress calculations, interference fits, thermal growth, hoop and tensile stresses, thread loadings and tolerance analyses.
- Removing risk by supporting engineering design investigations and Root Cause Analysis (RCA) activities.
- Familiarity with Product Introduction Processes (PROMPT & DEVELOP) and leadership/support of gateway reviews.
- Authoring, reviewing, signing off technical documentation for Engineering and Through Life Support.
- Delivery of monthly KPI milestone targets.
- Training, mentoring and leadership support for engineering personnel.
- Delivery of high quality, robust designs (models, drawings, BOMs etc.) fit for purpose with DFA/DFM mentality and ‘Right First Time’ philosophy.
- Increased satisfaction from internal/external stakeholders (communication, reporting, support).
- Delivery against assigned milestones and project tasks on time and to budget.
- Design assurance documentation of high quality, aligned with process and procedural requirements.
- Consistent delivery of KPI’s month on month.
- Performance objectives met within agreed timescales.
- Personal development targets met (competence in programming, increased knowledge of our products, processes and procedures).
- Support and mentoring that generates demonstrable skills growth within the team.
- Achievement of Engineering Approval status or higher.
- A Mechanical, Automotive or Aeronautical Engineering degree or equivalent qualification/work experience.
- Mechanical design experience using CATIA V5 & Windchill, with rotating equipment such as shafts, bearings, seals, structures etc.
- Must have an understanding of engineering materials and production methods relevant to them.
- Experience of Electromechanical Design and Engineering using 3D CAD tools.
- Good working knowledge of MS Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint).
- Effective written and verbal communication skills to all levels within the business.
- Ability to plan work and supervise others to meet monthly milestones/tasks with strong time management.
- Self‑motivated and able to work on own initiative.
- Ability to work under pressure to meet project and programme deadlines.
- Direct experience with high‑speed power generation and motor technologies.
- Basic understanding of Mechatronics and Electronics.
- Experience dealing with internal/external customers or stakeholders.
- Experience working with Engineering service suppliers, defining Statements of Work and approving deliverables for outsourced staff.
