Overview

Are you an experienced finance leader ready to make a big impact in a large and complex organisation? We're looking for a proactive and forward-thinking Senior Management Accountant to deliver high-quality financial services, strengthen financial controls, and influence strategic decision-making across the Council. This role provides financial support to Children's Services. This is a fantastic opportunity for a qualified finance professional with strong leadership capability to shape the way our organisation plans, manages and delivers its financial responsibilities.

About us

Buckinghamshire Council is a relatively new organisation that combines the strengths and expertise of the previous five councils in the county to create positive change for local people, communities, and businesses. We are firmly focused on the future and have made a clear commitment to serve residents better and to provide stronger representation for Buckinghamshire, both locally and nationally.

About the role

You'll be a confident, collaborative, and solutions-focused finance professional who thrives in a complex environment. You bring a strong technical background combined with the leadership qualities needed to inspire and develop a high-performing team.

You will bring:
  • Substantial experience as a technical or professional finance expert within a large, complex organisation.
  • Strong expertise in financial reporting, accounting standards, budget management, forecasting, and financial control.
  • Deep understanding of financial policies, legislation, external funding, grants, and statutory returns.
  • Extensive knowledge of local government finance and wider sector influences.
  • Proven experience managing major financial projects, change initiatives, and system/process improvements.
  • Outstanding communication, persuasion and influencing skills.
  • Excellent analytical ability with strong ICT capability, including Microsoft applications.
Any-Desk

As an 'any-desk' worker, you'll need to be connected to our network to access digital folders and resources, but this can either be from home or an office location when required. You will be required to work from the office a couple of times a week, depending on your role and team requirements.

About you

You will be a confident and influential finance professional with substantial experience in a large and complex organisation. A natural leader, you inspire and develop others while maintaining high performance standards and strong professional credibility. You bring expert knowledge of financial reporting, accounting standards, budget management, forecasting, grants, statutory returns and local government finance. With excellent analytical ability, you can interpret complex financial information, identify trends and risks, and communicate insights clearly to both financial and non-financial audiences.

You thrive in a changing environment, managing projects, improving systems and processes, and driving innovation in financial services. Fully CCAB/CIMA qualified and educated to degree level, you combine strategic awareness with exceptional problem-solving skills, strong ICT capability for example SAP, and the ability to build relationships, influence outcomes and deliver customer-focused solutions.
