Clinical Sister/Charge Nurse - Aylesford Unit

This is an exciting opportunity for an experienced cancer nurse to take on this specialist nursing role. You will primarily work within the Aylesford Unit at Warwick Hospital, with possible cross‑site cover at the Rigby Unit, Stratford Hospital.

The post requires vision, innovation and the ability to work across professional boundaries, underpinned by a real desire to provide the highest standards of patient care. You will work within day case, outpatient and inpatient settings and, as an experienced haematology or oncology nurse, you will be required to develop your knowledge and skills to undertake nurse‑led assessment and nurse‑led clinics.

You will be part of a committed team of professionals and work closely with the Nurse Consultant – Cancer Services, the Advanced Nurse Practitioners and other Specialist Practitioners. You will primarily work Monday to Friday, with potential evenings, weekends and Bank Holidays. Flexible team working is essential to meet our service needs.

Main duties of the job

Job holder will work primarily at the Aylesford Unit and be based within the Chemotherapy Suite. In partnership with the Nurse Consultant, Specialist Practitioners and Unit Manager, you will support the delivery of a consistently high‑quality and cost‑effective service.

Job responsibilities

Clinical

Assist the Unit Manager in leading a team of nurses in delivering a high standard of care. Manage specialist care for inpatient, outpatient and day case patients, including chemotherapy administration and management of complications such as neutropenic sepsis. Participate in the acute oncology nurse rota and undertake clinical duties including venesection, central venous access, peripheral cannulation and systemic anticancer drug administration.

Take part in chemotherapy clinics, including nurse‑led telephone assessment, holistic assessment and end‑of‑chemotherapy reviews. Audit care against agreed standards, identify weaknesses and develop action plans, implement information strategies, and communicate complex information to patients and carers. Base practice on current best evidence and lead on day‑unit/chemotherapy practice and research implementation.

Services

Maintain services to meet contract and quality standards, take corrective action and inform the Unit Manager of unresolved problems. Review standard of care and documentation, benchmark against NMC guidelines and other targets. Promote patient involvement, manage communication systems, undertake audits, investigate complaints and untoward incidents, and support system improvement.

Finance

Contribute to planning, monitoring and control of unit resources, assisting the Unit Manager to keep expenditures within budgets and optimise nursing resources through equitable distribution of staff leave and skill mix.

People

Contribute to recruitment and selection of quality staff, develop teams and individuals, facilitate staff development, monitor staff performance, plan induction of new staff, ensure appropriate staffing, foster productive working relationships, promote Trust policy compliance, and report difficult cases.

Information

Provide information and advice toward organisational objectives, attend divisional and other meetings, and collect and organise information for incorporation into divisional service plans.

Professional

Keep abreast of new developments, maintain evidence‑based practice, manage personal professional development, ensure NMC registration and compliance with the NMC code of professional conduct.
