Position

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Porter/Driver based at University Hospital Ayr
. This post is offered on a permanent basis.

Hours

Post 1 is for 33.5 hours over a 2‑week rota covering day, night and weekend shifts. Post 2 is on Relief basis covering a wide variety of shift patterns for planned and unplanned leave.

From 1 April 2026, the working week for NHS Agenda for Change staff in Scotland will be reduced. Full‑time hours will reduce from 37 to 36 hours (pro rata for part‑time staff) without loss of earnings.

UK Driving Licence

A UK driving licence is essential for this role.

What You Will Do

Clinical Support Services is currently seeking a motivated and reliable individual to join our Portering Department. This varied role includes a range of responsibilities such as patient meal delivery, security support, grounds maintenance, general portering duties, and driving tasks. A flexible approach to both hours and shift patterns and hospital location is essential. Previous experience would be advantageous but full training will be given.

Training and/or Experience Required for this Post

The role of the porter is widely varied and consists of duties such as waste management; transfer of patients in and around the hospital sites; the transportation of meals, linen, specimens, stores, equipment and supplies; coordination of all internal and external mail; undertaking mortuary duties; assisting in incidents related to violence and aggression; and security‑related duties.

To work in the United Kingdom, a legal requirement exists to demonstrate the relevant permission to work in the country. This permission is, without exception, granted by the UK Visa and Immigration Service. NHS Ayrshire & Arran may offer visa sponsorship for certain roles, provided the post meets the minimum salary threshold and other required criteria. Sponsorship is not guaranteed and is assessed on a case‑by‑case basis following interview and pre‑employment checks.

The advertised salary is based on a full‑time contract and must be pro‑rated for part‑time positions.
