An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Continence Nurse for Care Homes (Band
6) to work within our Care Home Professional Support Team based at Ailsa Hospital NHS Ayrshire & Arran.
36 hours per week (full time) Monday to Friday. This post is offered on a permanent basis.
UK Driving LicenceA UK driving licence is essential for this role.
What you will doYou will be an integral member of the Care Home Professional Support Team (CHPST), providing professional nursing support, advice, education and supervision to the staff working within Older People and Adult Care Homes in Ayrshire & Arran.
The role requires you to work independently, managing a caseload and your own diary effectively. You must hold a valid driving licence and be able to travel to community locations and care homes throughout Ayrshire and Arran, using your own vehicle.
This position works in close collaboration with the Community Continence Team and teams within the Health & Social Care Partnerships, care home staff and their managers. You will support care homes and the CHPST to enhance knowledge and practice in the management of residents with both new and ongoing continence needs.
You will demonstrate excellent communication and written skills, alongside experience in quality improvement methodology and data collection. The role involves providing professional leadership, specialist nursing expertise and evidence‑based guidance in the delivery of education to support high standards of resident care.
Applicants must have excellent communication skills and a minimum of two years’ experience in continence management. You will work autonomously using professional judgement to prioritise and coordinate daily activities effectively.
You will be responsible for undertaking comprehensive, holistic assessment and offering specialist clinical advice on urinary management and related therapies, including the use of equipment. This includes advising a wide range of professionals, such as registered general nurses, mental health nurses and other healthcare staff on appropriate interventions, including the use of devices to support care.
Knowledge, training and/or experience required for this post- RGN with a minimum of 2 years of post‑registration experience and an interest in and commitment to continence promotion and management.
The post‑registration ‘Certificate in Continence Management’ (Continence Module Level 3, BSc) is essential.
- A degree/specialist qualification or equivalent experience.
- Well developed written and verbal communication skills.
- A commitment to lifelong learning and evidence of continuing professional development.
- Experience of working in the community setting/ Care homes is desirable.
- Ability to keep relevant skills/knowledge updated and documented.
- Experience in teaching residents, carers and professional colleagues.
- Post‑graduate module in teaching in nursing practice is desirable.
- Extensive training and knowledge in continence products/fitting/efficient use and environmental factors related to disposal.
- Practice Supervisor/Assessor experience desirable.
