Job Overview: Kern Community College District is soliciting applications for part‑time, hourly adjunct instructors for the 2024‑2025 academic year. The successful candidate will be expected to provide instruction in a full range of Sociology courses in the Rising Scholars Program, including day, evening, weekend, large class, distance learning, and multiple teaching methodologies.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Teaching a full range of Sociology courses.
  • Participating in student recruitment and articulation of transfer programs for the Behavioral Science department.
  • Maintaining subject matter currency.
  • Developing and revising curriculum.
  • Using computer and multimedia technology.
  • Assessing student learning and program‑level outcomes.
  • Collegially participating in department, college, and discipline‑specific professional activities.

Knowledge & Abilities:

  • Ability to work effectively and harmoniously with colleagues in an environment that promotes innovation, teaching, learning and service to a diverse student population.
  • Ability to effectively work with students with a wide range of skills, motivations, academic, and vocational goals.
  • Ability to develop curriculum, including curriculum delivered via different modalities.
  • Ability to participate in recruitment and articulation activities with local schools, colleges, and universities.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
  • Demonstrated ability to maintain subject matter currency.
  • Ability to assess student learning outcomes.
  • Knowledge of computers and willingness to explore new technologies that would benefit the program.
  • Knowledge of and commitment to the California community college mission.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Master’s in sociology.
  • OR Bachelor’s in sociology AND a Master’s in anthropology, ethnic studies, social work, or psychology.
  • OR the equivalent. Certain combinations of education, experience, and other accomplishments may be judged as equal; applicants must submit an APPLICATION FOR EQUIVALENCE form with supporting documents.
  • Demonstrated sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students.
  • Degrees and credits from accredited institutions (Title V Section 53406). Foreign degrees require evaluation by a NACES or ACEI approved service.
