Shift: 3‑12 Hour Rotational Shifts

Responsibilities
  • Under the direction of the UC Supervisor, this position is responsible to collaborate with the BFMC health care team to promote optimal patient treatment and outcomes by using critical thinking, communication, and assessment skills.
  • Implement patient procedures, tests, medication administration and education as ordered by the provider while adhering to policy and regulatory guidelines of Bakersfield Family Medical Group (BFMG).
  • Participate in an interdisciplinary and inter‑facility approach to achieving the mission, philosophy, and goals of BFMG.
  • Interact with other departments, clinic personnel, and outside providers in a professional and friendly manner to create and maintain a positive relationship with our internal and external customers.
  • Appropriate telephone etiquette.
  • Knowledge of basic nursing skills.
  • Triage patient problems and provide patient education over the phone as, or when appropriate.
  • Possess good clinical judgment, careful listening, critical thinking, and assessment skills in a fast‑paced environment while remaining calm and composed.
  • Skill on what questions to ask, as she/he cannot rely on visual observations or diagnostic tests to help make a diagnosis of patient's problem.
  • Obtain and document all pertinent patient information.
  • Assist patient to the triage examination room.
  • Anticipate, assist, and perform procedures ordered by the provider, within scope of practice.
  • Competence on procedures/services offered in BFMC Urgent Care:
    • Ankle‑Brachial Index
    • Specimen collection – blood draw, urinalysis, culture swab, etc.
    • Catheterization of the bladder
    • Colostomy/Urostomy care
    • Wound care and dressing changes
    • Ear lavage and eye irrigation
    • Electrocardiogram and recognizing basic arrhythmias
    • Audiogram
    • TB skin testing and result interpretation
    • Visual Acuity
    • Pulmonary Function Test
    • Basic orthopedic splinting and application of Durable Medical Equipment (DME)
  • Proficient in intravenous catheter insertion, intravenous medications, and infusion therapy.
  • Proficient in intravenous therapy including access and care to peripheral and central lines.
  • Proficient in venous access devices (PICC, port‑a‑cath) – access, infusion, dressing change, maintenance flushing and care according to standards and policy.
  • Administer medication as prescribed by a provider, within scope of practice.
  • Obtain vital signs and know the parameter of abnormal highs and lows, and when to notify a provider.
  • Perform CLIA waived and moderate complexity testing.
  • Serve as a mentor to support and guide new employees, especially during orientation and training.
  • Serve as the clinic expert in the field and act as the resource person for the rest of the staff regarding standard of care, and implementation of policies and procedures of the company.
  • On the day chosen to work the opening shift, open the unit in the morning and ensure that doors are locked in the evening and the staff will exit as a group.
  • Coordinate with Clinic Specialist and UC Supervisor to ensure adequate staffing; dismiss staff if necessary, to avoid unnecessary overtime.
  • Act as a legal agent for staff and/or patients, and report non‑compliance issues to UC Supervisor, Risk Management, or Employee Services.
  • Order supplies and ensure PAR levels are maintained.
  • Be the leader after office hours and on weekends and provide answers for Refer to UC Supervisor or Senior VP of Health Services if unsure of answer.
  • Report incidents that occur in Urgent Care following the chain of command.
  • Delegate patient care duties to support staff, as appropriate.
  • Maintain patient safety, privacy, and confidentiality in compliance with HIPAA.
  • Maintain compliance with infection control and proper waste management.
  • Reinforce and support patient education programs.
  • Maintain patient flow and room availability.
  • Clean and sterilize equipment, as necessary.
  • Stock and maintain examination rooms and nursing stations.
  • Document in patient electronic medical record and ensure that all encounters are completed properly.
