Description

American Traveler is seeking an experienced ER RN for a 13-week acute care assignment requiring at least 2 years of ER experience and both adult and pediatric ER background.

Details
  • Acute care setting in a busy Emergency Department seeing approximately 325 visits per day between Adult and Peds ER
  • Adult ER has 36 treatment areas, Peds ER has 12 treatment areas plus 8 fast track pods
  • Fast track area is run out of the lobby by midlevels from 11a-1p, staffed in part by LVNs and RNs
  • Separate triage area staffed by 3 triage nurses to start the day
  • ER holds are intermixed within the unit and managed by ED RNs
  • No separate psych/seclusion rooms, with in-house security available
  • Patient ratios: ICU 1:2, Peds 1:4, Adults 1:4, procedural sedation 1:1
  • Treats all diagnoses from minor walk-ins to critically ill patients, including respiratory failure, asthma, abdominal pain, fractures, substance abuse, and occasional psych holds
  • Adult ER is a STEMI, CVA, and burn receiving center, with a burn nurse available to assess patients
  • Peds ER is a designated pediatric receiving center seeing about 30,000 pediatric visits per year, staffed by a dedicated pediatric physician
  • Uses Cerner EMR
  • Phillips telemetry monitoring with a dedicated monitor tech; RNs are not required to read strips
  • Respiratory therapy available for vents, CPAP, BiPap, high flow, ABGs, breathing treatments, and EKGs
  • Phlebotomy performed by dedicated phlebotomy staff
  • Some transport support available for X-Ray or CT
  • 12-hour shifts available: 7a-7p, 11a-11p, 3p-3a, and 7p-7a with no block scheduling
  • Must be flexible with scheduling and is first to float within the ER, including floating to Peds ER
  • No floating outside of the ER department
  • Weekend requirement of 4 shifts per month, either 1 per week or 2 every other week
  • No call requirement, but may be placed on standby during low census with a 30-minute response time if called in
Requirements
  • Active CA RN license required
  • Current BLS, ACLS, PALS, and NIHSS certifications required
  • Minimum 3 years of RN experience required
  • Minimum 2 years of ER experience required
  • Experience with both adult and pediatric ER populations required, as roughly half the patient population is pediatric
  • Significant Peds ER experience required for candidates working in Peds ER, not just general pediatric experience
  • Experience with patient volumes similar to this high-acuity ER required
  • Triage experience required
  • BSN not required for this position
Additional Information
  • Provide direct patient care across the full spectrum of ER acuity, from fast track to critical care
  • Complete a basic EKG interpretation test during orientation; critical care RNs (ED/ICU/PICU) will be assigned additional testing such as STEMI and Procedural Sedation curriculum
  • Supported by charge nurses, house supervisors, ER techs, CNAs, and LVNs
  • Expected to work holidays unless the holiday falls during contracted time off
  • Dress code requires navy blue scrubs for RNs; hoodies, sweatshirts, and sweat jackets are not permitted
  • Job sharing arrangements (duos) are not accepted for this position
  • First-time travelers will not be considered for this position
