Provides semi-skilled labor to repair and maintain gasoline, compressed natural gas, hydrogen fuel cell, battery electric buses, paratransit vehicles, and other motorized equipment in compliance with established procedures and maintenance standards to ensure the safety and reliability of the District’s fleet vehicles.
CLASS CHARACTERISTICSThis is a journey-level classification requiring the successful performance of the majority of assigned job tasks independently and consistent with established work standards and District protocols.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISEDThis classification reports to the Director of Maintenance, Maintenance Manager, and Maintenance Supervisors. This classification does not supervise.

- Ability to diagnose mechanical troubles and determine appropriate maintenance work
- The use of shop equipment and tools to make necessary repairs
The functions and duties listed below represent the various types of work that may be performed. The omission of specific duties does not exclude them if the work is related. Management reserves the right to add, modify, change or rescind work assignments as needed.
- Repair and maintain CNG, H2 FC, and gasoline powered buses and other transportation equipment
- Steam clean equipment
- Perform preventative maintenance
- Assist in the repair of equipment
- Mount and dismount tires
- Adjust brakes
- Install batteries, tires, and wiring
- Grease and service equipment
- Change oil and oil filters
- Service and perform simple heavy-duty work
Any combination of experience and education that would likely provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the duties and responsibilities of the classification is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge, skills, and abilities is as follows:
EDUCATION, TRAINING, AND/OREXPERIENCE:
High school diploma or equivalent to graduation from high school (GED).
LICENSES AND/OR CERTIFICATES:Possess a valid California Driver’s License with a driving record acceptable to the District, along with three (3) years of driving experience.
REQUISITE KNOWLEDGE AND SKILL LEVELS:- TIA Tire Certification
- CNG Tank Certification
- ASE H-4 Transit Bus Air Brake Certification
- ASE H-8 Preventative Maintenance and Inspection Certification
- Type II Refrigeration License
- Forklift Operators Permit
- Ability to obtain California Commercial Class “B” Driver’s license with air brake and passenger endorsements within 6 months of position appointment.
- Ability to provide own hand tools and a storage cabinet.
- Ability to obtain and maintain a forklift operation certificate.
- Ability to obtain and maintain a CNG / Hydrogen Tank Inspection Certification.
- Ability to obtain and maintain a T.I.A Commercial Tire Certification.
- Must possess and maintain ASE Transit Bus Air Brake, Preventative Maintenance, and two other ASE Transit Bus certifications.
- Requisite reading, mathematical, comprehension, and written language skills to perform the essential job functions.
- Adequate computer skills and the ability to accurately record vehicle maintenance records electronically.
- Ability to follow instructions from supervision and understand written procedures to complete work tasks.
- Ability to demonstrate a high degree of determination and commitment to personal and professional development and learning.
- Ability to learn effective use of vehicle diagnostic software applications. Ability to demonstrate a high degree of determination and commitment to personal and professional development and learning.
