The City of Baldwin Park is hiring. The Public Safety Trainee classification is an entry level non-sworn, non-peace officer, at-will position. Candidates are required to attend an academy that provides specialized instruction for Public Safety Trainees in a high-stress 26-week California Commission on Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) basic training academy to obtain a California Peace Officer Certification and will also receive additional department training designed to provide an overview of the criminal justice system, various laws and procedures, law enforcement techniques, first aid, physical fitness, and other related duties.
Public Safety Trainees learn the philosophy of community-based policing with a familiarization between law enforcement and community residents that emphasizes solving problems collaboratively.
This position is designated as at-will, serving at the pleasure of the Police Chief and subject to discharge without cause and without right of appeal.
About the DepartmentThe Baldwin Park Police Department is comprised of 70 sworn staff, including the Police Chief, Police Captain, Lieutenants, Sergeants, and Police Officers, and 36 non-sworn support staff. The PositionThe Public Safety Trainee participates in a Basic Law Enforcement Training Academy approved by the California Commission on Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST), in a non-sworn capacity. This is a non-benefited, part-time position. Upon successful completion of the POST Basic Police Academy, and approval of the Police Chief, a Public Safety Trainee will be sworn in as a full-time Police Officer.
RESPONSIBILITIES/DUTIES- The incumbent will successfully attend and graduate from a POST certified basic academy.
- Responsibilities include learning use and care of firearms and related equipment; meet Police Officer requirements included in the California State Government Code; and perform other related duties as required or assigned.
- Police Officer Trainees do not have police powers; they may be assigned non-sworn duties within the Police Department.
- Basic reading, writing, and spelling.
- Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
- Ability to think clearly and act quickly in emergency situations.
- Deal constructively with conflict and develop effective resolutions.
- Learn, understand, and interpret laws and regulations.
- Use and care of firearms.
- High School Diploma or GED Equivalents, or have attained a two-year, four-year, or advanced degree from an accredited college or university.
- Must be at least 21 years of age at the time of graduation from the Police Academy or 20.5 years of age at the time of submitting the employment application.
- Must be a United States Citizen or legally authorized to work in the United States under federal law.
- Must possess a valid California Class C Driver's License.

, proof of education must be submitted with the application. Upon successful completion of all required training, Public Safety Trainees will be eligible for consideration for appointment to a sworn Police Officer position.
Public Safety Trainees who do not successfully complete all required training will be automatically terminated from employment without the right of appeal.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING ENVIRONMENTWork is performed in a classroom environment and in the field for training exercises; requires strenuous physical efforts and ability to meet physical standards of the CA POST Academy. This position involves the ability to sit, stand, walk, run, kneel, crouch, squat, twist, climb, and lift up to 50 lbs. May be exposed to cold, heat, noise, confining space, chemicals, explosive materials, mechanical hazards, and electrical hazards.
