About the roleWe are looking for an experienced legal journalist to join us as Deputy Editor and play a central role in the next phase of Legal Futures’ growth.
This is a high-profile, hands‑on role for someone who wants real editorial responsibility, visible impact and the freedom to shape coverage in a fast‑moving sector. You will work closely with the editor and business owners, helping to drive daily news output while also contributing ideas that expand our reach, influence and commercial opportunities.
You’ll be trusted to spot stories before others do, develop strong relationships across the legal market, and deliver sharp, accurate journalism to daily deadlines.
Key responsibilities- Sourcing, writing and publishing daily news stories for Legal Futures
- Proactively generating story ideas and cultivating a strong network of contacts
- Reporting from conferences, events and round tables around the UK
- Producing longer‑form features, interviews and content for special reports
- Conducting interviews and developing editorial content in collaboration with commercial partners
- Maintaining editorial contacts within the CRM
- Posting content online, including headlines, captions, images, tagging and metadata
- Contributing ideas to the commercial and strategic development of Legal Futures, working closely with the owners and business development manager
- Attending Legal Futures events, management meetings and strategy days
- Taking full responsibility for editorial production during the editor’s absence
- Supporting the wider business as needed in a small, agile team environment
- A strong track record of producing high‑quality, insightful legal journalism, including originating your own stories
- Excellent news writing and editing skills, with sharp judgment and close attention to detail
- A deep understanding of the UK legal market, with an established and growing contact book
- Confidence working at pace to daily deadlines without compromising accuracy or quality
- A solid understanding of media law, including libel and regulatory risk
- An appreciation of SEO best practice and a curiosity about how AI and new technologies can extend reach and engagement
- Comfortable working independently
