Principal Engineer; Fullstack

At AKQA, the Principal Engineer role is at the pinnacle of both software and cloud engineering & web development disciplines. An engineer who has achieved mastery of their craft and relishes new challenges, comfortable researching, adopting, and shaping new technologies across their domain and beyond, drawing parallels from across the technology landscape. This role shares similarities with ‘Staff Engineer’ in other organizations and demonstrates thought and practical leadership within our engineering capability.

Located in London (Farringdon), United Kingdom, you will work in a progressive, meritocratic environment, with access to world-renowned thought leadership and collaboration with some of the brightest minds in their fields.

You should be an established lead engineer and practitioner of the latest web and cloud technologies, building best-in-class digital applications for modern users. Key areas include development of Node.js and Java applications, systems integrations, API design, Dev Ops activities, server and database management, serverless architectures, and security mechanisms on AWS, Azure, or GCP cloud hosting.

• Hands-on design and development of large-scale projects.
• Proactive engagement in engineering communities and thought leadership internally and externally.
• Line management and coaching of senior, junior, and offshore engineers, maintaining high productivity levels.
• Collaborate across disciplines to facilitate problem-solving and innovation.
• Generate ideas and architect solutions, securing stakeholder buy-in.
• Analyze client business goals to build appropriate technical solutions and drive change if needed.
• Minimize technical risks and ensure high-quality outputs.
• Implement testing strategies and promote rapid, high-quality development practices.
• Identify and resolve bottlenecks within delivery processes, influencing team behaviors to improve outcomes.
• Operate within lean, agile, or hybrid methodologies.

You will be a self-starting technologist with broad expertise. Expected skills include:

• Computer Science Degree or equivalent experience.
• 8+ years of industry experience.
• Ability to understand and communicate vision and ideas, designing and gaining buy-in from developers.
• Attention to detail and passion for new technology.
• Ability to articulate opinions backed by reasoned arguments.
• Advocacy for Agile methodologies (SCRUM, KANBAN, Innovation Sprints) and understanding their strengths.
• Commitment to process, quality, and security improvements.
• Analytical, positive, personable, and professional demeanor.
