Library Assistant – Howard Community College (HCC)
Position type:
Part‑time, Non‑exempt.
Hours:
9–25 per week as needed within library hours (Mon–Thu 8 am–11 pm, Fri 8 am–5 pm, Sat/Sun 1 pm–5 pm). Salary: $17.00 per hour.
The Faculty Development & Learning Innovation team is seeking a Library Assistant to join the HCC Library. The role involves providing exceptional customer service to all users, upholding and administering library and college policies, and working under the direction of the Circulation and Access Services Manager. The goal is to deliver an optimal library experience for users.
Responsibilities- Assist users with checking in/out library materials and placing holds.
- Manage fines and fees accurately.
- Support the usage and reservation of study rooms; monitor noise levels and guide users to appropriate areas.
- Utilize the library catalog and databases to locate and retrieve books and resources; shelve and edge material.
- Provide basic computer and technology assistance for printing, scanning, copying, saving, downloading, and uploading.
- Answer user questions and direct them to library and campus resources/services.
- Resolve issues as they arise and communicate effectively with staff and supervisors.
- Support colleagues and supervisors with various tasks.
- Perform opening and closing procedures and other duties as assigned.
Minimum education:
High school or equivalent.
Minimum experience:
1 year.
Preferred experience:
1‑year customer service; previous library work preferred.
- Attention to detail, organizational skills, and ability to multitask.
- Independent work and teamwork capability.
- Outstanding customer service and communication skills.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to maintain strict confidentiality.
- Physical ability to stand for long periods, lift up to 50 lb, bend as needed, and strong fine motor skills for computer use.
- Proficient telephone skills.
- Flexible availability during library hours, including weekends.
- Capable of standing for long periods of time.
- Ability to lift, push up to 50 lb, and bend as needed.
- Strong fine motor skills for operating computer terminals.
