Overview

We are seeking a Director of Research and Information Services to lead our Research Information Center (RIC). The role involves managing a team of three research and information professionals and developing and executing the strategic vision of research services for the firm and its clients. This position is ideal for a research and information leader with law firm experience who is forward‑thinking and open to innovative solutions and ideas.

Responsibilities
  • Develop short‑ and long‑term strategic goals and objectives for RIC emphasizing innovative approaches to the delivery of information resources.
  • Manage procurement activities, including analyzing usage data, developing KPIs, and negotiating favorable pricing and terms.
  • Develop and manage the RIC budget, including managing vendors, negotiating contracts, and ensuring terms and service meet the needs of the firm.
  • Develop cost management strategies and alignment of information resources to eliminate redundancy, maximize the use of online versions, and manage vendor agreements.
  • Partner with Marketing and Business Development to support firm competitive intelligence research and maintain proper risk management standards.
  • Partner with the New Business and Conflicts team to support new business acceptance workflows by positioning the team to conduct client diligence research and analysis aligned with intake standards.
  • Monitor trends in library services and information resources, with the goal of identifying, implementing and managing new technologies (including specifically Artificial Intelligence).
  • Conduct and oversee research for attorneys and staff across legal, business, and specialized areas, using relevant databases and research tools.
  • Direct all activities for research and reference collection development and maintenance, including the acquisition of research and reference materials and sources.
  • Ensure departmental awareness and education/training on developments in legal research, technology, information management, and other developments related to law research and reference operations.
  • Partner with Human Resources and other departments on employee onboarding and training on resources supported by the department.
  • Ensure swift processing of departures and arrivals, with a minimum of disruption.
Qualifications
  • Master’s degree in Library & Information Science from an ALA accredited program, preferably with coursework in law librarianship or legal bibliography.
  • Minimum of three (3) years of experience.
  • Law firm experience preferred.
  • Previous experience with direct supervision, budgeting, project and organizational planning.
  • Must exercise the highest level of confidentiality and integrity.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a team environment.
  • Detail oriented and highly organized.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Demonstrate critical thinking, problem solving and good judgement.
  • Well‑developed and professional interpersonal skills to interact effectively with all organizational levels of the firm.
Physical Demands & Work Environment
  • Responsibilities may require an adjusted work schedule, evening and/or weekend hours to meet deadlines.
  • Some occasional travel may be required to regional offices.
  • This job operates in an office setting and is largely sedentary, requiring the routine use of a computer and other standard office equipment. The ability to open file cabinets, lift files, bend and stand on a stool may also be required.
