Fine Arts Workshop Technician
The Chadwick
A. Boseman College of Fine Arts, Department of Art at Howard University seeks a Fine Arts Workshop Technician to work in a university context. The technician will work with materials such as paint, wood, metal, textiles, ceramics, and audio‑visual equipment, supporting students across a range of art disciplines.
- Plan and oversee day‑to‑day operations of the Fine Arts Workshop, ensuring safe working environments and compliance with university and state health and safety policies.
- Provide instruction and supervision to undergraduate, graduate and post‑graduate students and staff in the use of specialist tools, software, techniques and equipment.
- Maintain, repair, and upgrade workshop equipment; organize routine and major maintenance, record keeping, and procurement of consumables.
- Assist in the installation of student and faculty exhibitions, including design and set‑up of studio and exhibition spaces.
- Provide health and safety training and keep detailed training records; act as local area Health and Safety Advisor, Fire Steward and First Aider.
- Evaluate and resolve technical queries and malfunctions from students, faculty, and technical staff.
- Prepare risk assessments, incident records and collaborate with the line manager on special assignments.
Essential:
- Knowledge of woodworking, metalworking, casting, design, and fabrication techniques.
- Proficiency with ceramic glazes, kilns, and related processes.
- IT skills, CAD & 3D modeling techniques and related software.
- Strong analytical, problem‑solving, and interpersonal skills.
- Excellent communication and rapport‑building with students and faculty.
- Clear understanding of health and safety law and related implications.
Desirable:
- Accredited Health & Safety certificates.
- Experience with 3D software, laser cutting, 3D printing or similar.
- Knowledge and interest in the art and creative industries.
- Competence in computer‑aided manufacturing equipment for plastics and paper.
- Willingness to learn new skills as research requirements evolve.
- Advanced degree (BA, BFA, MFA, Ph.D.) or equivalent experience in multiple relevant disciplines; typically 3 years’ experience in a workshop environment.
- Solid understanding of woodworking, metalwork, and construction of complex product designs and art installations.
- Familiarity with safe operation and maintenance of workshop equipment and tools.
- Capable of planning, setting up, and managing Art and Design exhibition shows in collaboration with Course Leaders.
- Experienced in designing and setting up studio spaces.
Expected salary range: $65,000 – $70,000 per year, commensurate with experience.
