Job Description & How to Apply Below

Baltimore Public Media (BPM) is the parent organization of WYPR 88.1 FM and WTMD 89.7 FM. We provide rich, vibrant programming in news, music, arts, and culture—across expanding radio and digital formats—that connects, enriches, and elevates the residents and communities of Baltimore and the region. Our mission is rooted in journalistic integrity, cultural merit, and community service. Position Summary

Baltimore Public Media (WYPR 88.1 FM) seeks a creative and mission‑driven News Host to deliver accurate, engaging, and community‑focused news coverage to our listeners. The ideal candidate is a skilled communicator with strong editorial judgment, a warm and credible on‑air presence, and a passion for public service journalism that reflects and connects the diverse voices of the region.

MIDDAY, which airs Monday through Friday 12:00 noon to 1:00 pm, provides Marylanders with the latest news, local and national politics, education and the environment, popular culture and the arts, sports and science, race and religion, movies and medicine. Some shows will spend the hour exploring one topic while others will be in a magazine format, covering two or three topics. There will also be special broadcasts (e.g., live election coverage) and coordination with outside vendors to produce live and pre‑recorded in‑person broadcasts.

The Managing Host oversees MIDDAY staff to plan and coordinate five, one‑hour shows per week, and reconfigure content that can be re‑aired when necessary.

* Note:

We will be looking to expand the program to either a two‑hour block or a potential 8 am‑9 am local show along with the duties of a one‑hour program in the afternoon at a future date.

Key Responsibilities
  • Serve as on‑air host and newscaster during assigned shifts, adhering to all FCC regulations and WYPR standard operating procedures.
  • Engage listeners in a genuine, authentic, and informed manner that reflects WYPR’s journalistic integrity and community values.
  • Write, produce, and deliver accurate and compelling local newscasts, ensuring clarity, fairness, and timeliness.
  • Collaborate with editors, reporters, and producers to integrate local, regional, and national news into cohesive programming.
  • Produce promotional and other on‑air content to support station initiatives, special coverage, and community engagement.
  • Serve as a fill‑in host for other WYPR shifts as assigned, maintaining consistent quality and tone across all programming.
  • Participate in special news and interview programs, live events, and on‑air fundraising campaigns to support the mission and sustainability of Baltimore Public Media.
  • Represent WYPR at community and station events, fostering positive relationships with listeners, partners, and stakeholders.
  • Other responsibilities as assigned.
Qualifications
  • At least 10 years of experience in audio journalism, public radio, or podcast production.
  • Strong editorial judgment, attention to detail, and a solid sense of narrative journalism.
  • Excellent research, writing, and communication skills.
  • Audio editing proficiency (Adobe Audition).
  • Demonstrated ability to elevate diverse voices and topics with nuance and sensitivity.
  • Demonstrated patience working with colleagues new to a process.
  • General awareness of local and regional news.
  • Familiarity with Greater Baltimore’s successes, challenges, and the diversity within communities is highly preferred.
  • Able to lead by example, delegate respectfully, and make sound independent decisions, especially in times of breaking news.
  • Foster a collaborative team spirit based on mutual respect.
  • Bachelor’s degree in journalism, mass‑communications, or a related field.
