We are seeking an Orthodontic Assistant.
Specific Duties & Responsibilities
- Interacting with visitors, patients, and health care workers.
- Seating patients and transmitting accurate information to doctor and parents.
- Recording medical history and taking radiographs, intraoral and extraoral photographs and digital intraoral scans.
- Uploading and compiling records in patient’s digital file.
- Taking impressions and pouring and trimming study models.
- Four-handed dentistry and assisting with direct patient care during orthodontic procedures (delivery of appliances, bonding braces, arch wire changes, debonding braces, etc.).
- Fabricating appliances such as Essix retainers.
- Coordinating care in multidisciplinary team setting.
- Performing office management tasks, ensuring that clinical operations are performed efficiently, maintaining supplies and equipment, and managing inventory.
- Serving as an infection control officer, preparing and sterilizing instruments and equipment, setting up and cleaning operatories according to hospital standards.
- Providing patients with instructions for oral care following orthodontic treatment procedures.
- Communicating with patients and suppliers (e.g., scheduling appointments, billing and ordering supplies, managing laboratory shipments and deliveries).
Special Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities
- Communicate effectively and professionally with others.
- Provide patient-centered care with compassion.
- Provide chairside assistance with four-handed dentistry technique.
- Perform clinical duties in timely manner.
- Use a computer to chart patient information and communicate with providers.
- Learn to use new technologies in orthodontics (such as intraoral scanner, 3D printer, etc.)
Physical Requirements
- Ability to hold small objects and place them with precision.
- Ability to see small objects.
- Ability to speak clearly and understand others.
- Ability to be able to sit or stand for long durations of time.
- High School Diploma / GED.
- Successful completion of an accredited Dental Assistant program, conducted in an educational institution accredited by the Commission on Dental Accreditation of the ADA (American Dental Association).
- Certified Orthodontic Assistant credential (Dental Assisting National Board).
- Licensure by Maryland State Board of Dental Examiners as a Dental Assistant certified in Dental Radiation Technology.
- Certification by the American Red Cross in Cardiopulmonary Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR).
- Three years of prior experience as an Orthodontic Assistant.

JHU Equivalency Formula: 30 undergraduate degree credits (semester hours) or 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience. Additional related experience may substitute for required education on the same basis.
