Overview
Inpatient Physician Assistant (Orthopaedics) – Johns Hopkins University. The Johns Hopkins Department of Orthopaedic Surgery is seeking an Inpatient Physician Assistant to work collaboratively within a multi-disciplinary team under the direction, supervision and responsibility of a physician, and in accordance with established policies. The PA will evaluate patient health status through diagnostic procedures and tests and provide therapeutic patient care under the physician’s supervision and established protocols.
Responsibilities- Interview patients and compile patient histories to assist in determining health status.
- Perform physical examinations and document normal and abnormal findings.
- Obtain specimens, perform routine laboratory tests, and order non-routine laboratory tests or procedures as required.
- Analyze patient history, examination findings, and lab values to make preliminary assessments for physician review.
- Develop care/treatment plans according to established protocols; confer with supervising physician and other professionals before implementing treatment.
- Perform procedures as required (e.g., starting IV lines, applying casts, traction and splints, tube placement, suturing wounds).
- Prepare patients for surgery using sterile technique; assist in the operating room as needed.
- Insert monitoring devices (e.g., urinary catheters, temperature probes) as appropriate.
- Write post-operative orders including labs, medications, and care plans for physician review.
- Attend rounds with physicians or staff to monitor patient progress and communicate care plans.
- Provide patient and family education on health maintenance, disease prevention, and home care under physician supervision.
- Participate in continuing education to maintain current knowledge of procedures and protocols.
- Contribute to outpatient clinic activities and facilitate communication between teams and consulting services.
- Request consultations with other departments as necessary and liaise with social work, rehabilitation, and other services.
- Provide first or second assist in operating room as required and evaluate wounds, change dressings and perform wound care.
- Knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy, physiology, chemistry, psychology, pharmacology, clinical medicine, radiology, microbiology and pathology as acquired through an accredited program.
- Must be registered by the Maryland Board of Medical Examiners or equivalent licensing authority.
- On-the-job experience with clinical and/or surgical procedures, patient care, medical protocols and testing procedures (typical range: six to twelve months).
- Analytical ability to evaluate patient health status and implement appropriate care plans.
- Strong interpersonal skills to interview, teach and counsel patients and to instruct healthcare personnel on procedures and treatment.
- Bachelor's Degree;
Certification by the NCCPA or similar national certifying body; completion of a CAAHEP-accredited Physician Assistant program. - Licensed as a PA in Maryland or another state where practicing.
- Current American Heart Association or American Red Cross CPR certification.
- Maintain current licensure and certification for the duration of employment.
- Equivalencies may substitute for required experience/education as permitted by Johns Hopkins University.
