Summary

This posting is a pool for those who are able to teach in-person classes at the main campus of Howard Community College and that are interested in teaching college level Composition (ENGL 121), College Composition support/corequisite courses (similar to developmental writing), Literature, and/or Information Literacy (INFO 100) courses offered ether, these courses cover all levels of reading and writing skills for students as well as researching and using information.

The Department Head, Course Coordinators, and ENGL Program Manager will review applicants for these positions when a need arises. Successful candidates will be provided with accessible and comprehensive teaching materials, join a collaborative department that values teamwork and that provides extensive support, professional development, and opportunities for advancement.

Courses:

  • ENGL 121 College Composition: a transfer‑level writing course that teaches students to develop and apply rhetorical knowledge for creating effective text‑based communication.
  • ENGL 021 Academic Reading and Writing: developmental writers are placed directly into ENGL 121; this supportive course is closely aligned with the College Composition curriculum.
  • INFO 100 Information Literacy: teaches students core information literacy and critical thinking skills that transfer to other coursework.
  • Literature courses:
    American, African American, Asian American, Latin American, Middle Eastern, Ethics of Literature, Women’s literature, Literature in Film, Children’s Literature, Poetry, World Literature, The Short Story, and more.

Adjunct faculty may teach 1–3 courses each semester, depending on schedule and availability. In the English Department at HCC, adjunct faculty are considered part of the campus community: they are paired with experienced mentors, supported with curricular materials, invited to participate in professional development (including Faculty and Professional Learning Communities), and may have opportunities to engage in certain faculty teams or special projects.

Additional opportunities include embedded tutoring or tutoring students in the tutoring center.

Essential Role Responsibilities

This position requires computer and internet access. For the assigned course, prepare the course materials, prepare and update the learning management system course site (Canvas), attend required faculty/staff meetings, complete required trainings, meet with students as needed, grade/ assess student work, deliver quality instruction, and meet other employment‑related requirements from the division and the college.

Minimum Education Required

Master's degree

Preferred Experience
  • Master's degree in composition, creative writing, curriculum & instruction, English, literacy, literature, professional writing, reading, or other related fields.
  • A master's degree or higher is required.
  • Prior teaching experience preferred.
  • Available to teach in a face‑to‑face and/or online classroom environment.
  • Ability to learn to use a learning management system (Canvas) for course information, assignments, and grades.
