The Department of Earth & Planetary Sciences at Johns Hopkins University invites applications for the Glendora and Howard L. Pim Postdoctoral Fellowship in Global Change. The fellowship lasts one year, with an anticipated extension for a second year. The position carries a salary of $62,232 per year, a fringe‑benefit stipend of $5,000 for travel and research expenses, and eligibility to participate in Johns Hopkins University health plans.
Our department focuses on the basic Earth sciences, including:
- Geology, the science of the solid Earth and other terrestrial planets and satellites
- Geochemistry, devoted to understanding the chemistry of the solid Earth and natural waters
- Geophysics, concerned with a quantitative description of physical processes in the Earth and planetary sciences
- Oceanography, the study of ocean currents, biogeochemistry, and the ocean’s role in climate
- Atmospheric sciences, particularly the dynamics of atmospheric circulation on Earth and other outer planets and their satellites
- Ecology and paleo ecology, the study of the relationships between organisms and their environment today and in the geologic past
The department’s primary goals are research and the training of scholars who will contribute to the future of these disciplines. We emphasize basic principles and concepts rather than applied aspects and are committed to improving equity, diversity, and inclusion in the field of Earth and Planetary Sciences.
QualificationsWe seek an outstanding individual with a recent Ph.D. pursuing interdisciplinary research in Global Change. Candidates whose research spans the natural sciences, social sciences, health sciences, and/or public policy aspects of global change are especially encouraged to apply. Areas of interest include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Fundamental processes driving global change
- The impact of global change on air quality, water resources, ecosystems and ecological processes, and/or human health
- Adaptation of societal and natural systems to the effects of global change
- Energy resources
- Analysis of economic, sociological, public health, and policy implications of global change
We value experiences and goals related to improving equity, diversity, and inclusion in the field. Candidates whose research complements the current departmental expertise and scholarship are preferred. Candidates are encouraged to collaborate with faculty from other Hopkins departments and to contact faculty with whom they are interested in working.

The referenced salary range represents the minimum and maximum salaries for this position and is based on Johns Hopkins University’s good‑faith belief at the time of posting.
