Position: Teacher Health (26-27)

Teacher Health (26-27)

Position at Baltimore City Public Schools. Plans and implements an instructional program in Health and provides related educational services. Manages student behavior, assesses and evaluates student achievement, and modifies instructional activities as required. Performs a variety of student monitoring and support activities. Serves as Health education classroom teacher. Classes taught may be single grade or multi‑grade level, most often subject oriented, and may include skill or specialty focus.

Some positions work off‑site or in a combination of off‑site and classroom settings. Performs duties within a team or department or independently in a specialty area, including work in science or industrial arts laboratories where higher monitoring is required to prevent injury. Applicants may be considered for grades Pre‑K‑12.

Essential Functions
  • Assess student abilities relative to desired educational goals, objectives, and outcomes.
  • Plan and implement appropriate instructional/learning strategies and activities, selecting suitable materials and multimedia technology.
  • Develop, adapt, modify, and individualize educational materials, resources, techniques, methods, and strategies to meet students' needs within the City Schools curriculum framework.
  • Assume direct responsibility for student behavior development by establishing and maintaining effective discipline and management procedures.
  • Manage learner behavior in instructional settings to ensure a conducive learning environment and assist in managing behavior school‑wide.
  • Coordinate instructional activities and collaborate with professional staff, both school and non‑school based, to maximize learning opportunities.
  • Request assistance and work with resource personnel as needed.
  • Work in a self‑contained, team, departmental, itinerant capacity, or at a field work site as assigned.
  • Participate in in‑service and staff development activities and meetings as required.
  • Continuously assess student achievement and maintain assessment and evaluation documentation.
  • Continuously communicate with parents, written and oral, to keep them informed of student progress.
  • Continuously communicate with students about instructional expectations and progress.
  • Manage allotted learning time to maximize student achievement.
  • Assign work to and oversee paraprofessionals, parents, and student volunteers as needed.
  • Maintain a safe, healthy, and conducive classroom environment with accessible materials.
  • Serve at two or more schools on a regular basis if itinerant.
  • Make off‑school‑site visits to monitor students or confer with employers or site instructors as required.
  • Support or participate in school‑wide student activities, social events, and approved fundraising activities.
  • Monitor student behavior in non‑instructional areas, intervene as needed, and report to administrators.
  • Collaborate with other professionals (e.g., guidance counselors, librarians) to carry out school‑wide instructional or related activities.
  • Sponsor or coordinate extracurricular activities such as clubs, student organizations, and academic contests.
  • Promote all activities in compliance with equal employment and non‑discrimination policies and follow applicable laws and professional standards.
Desired Qualifications Required
  • Valid educator license in Health or eligible for a conditional license (health major or at least 12 college credits in health courses with a C or better and an overall GPA of 2.5 or better).
  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or institution.
  • Knowledge of federal laws protecting the educational services for students with disabilities.
  • Knowledge of content, curriculum, methods, materials, and equipment of instructional specialty to which assigned.
  • Excellent oral and written communication and human relations skills.
  • Ability to select instructional planning, management, and evaluation procedures that relate to student needs and the demands of the instructional environment.
  • Ability to apply knowledge of current research and theory to instructional programs.
  • Ability to plan and implement lessons based on division and school objectives and the needs and abilities of students.
