Position Description
Plans and implements an instructional program in General Social Studies and provides related educational services for students. Manages student behavior; assesses and evaluates student achievement; and modifies instructional activities as required. Carries out a variety of student monitoring and support activities.
Serves as a General Social Studies classroom teacher in middle school grades (grades 4 through
9). Classes taught may be single grade or multi‑grade, most often subject‑oriented, but may be skill or specialty oriented. Some positions work off‑site or in a combination of off‑site and classroom settings. Performs duties within a team or departmental setting and may work independently in a unique teaching specialty. Students may also attend reading, technology, Social Studies, or industrial arts/technology labs where higher safety monitoring is required.
Functions
- Assesses student abilities as related to desired educational goals, objectives, and outcomes.
- Plans and implements appropriate instructional/learning strategies and activities, determining suitable materials and leveraging multimedia and computer technology.
- Develops, adapts, and individualises educational materials, resources, techniques, methods, and strategies to meet student needs within the City Schools curriculum framework.
- Assumptively responsible for the development of appropriate student behaviour by establishing effective discipline and management procedures.
- Manages learner behaviour in instructional settings, ensuring a conducive learning environment and assisting in the management of student behaviour in other school areas.
- Coordinates instructional activities and collaborates with professional staff, both school‑based and non‑school‑based, to maximise learning opportunities.
- Requests assistance from and works with resource personnel, as needed.
- Works in self‑contained teams, departments, itinerantly, or at field sites as assigned.
- Participates in in‑service and staff development activities and staff meetings as required or assigned.
- Continually assesses student achievement and maintains appropriate assessment and evaluation documentation for reporting purposes.
- Maintains continuous communication with parents, both written and oral, to inform them of student progress.
- Communicates with students on instructional expectations and keeps them informed of their progress.
- Manages allotted learning time to maximize student achievement.
- Assigns work to and oversees paraprofessionals, parents, and student volunteers as required.
- Ensures the classroom and instructional environment is attractive, healthful, safe, and conducive to learning, with materials in good condition and accessible to students.
- Serves at two or more schools on a regular basis if itinerant.
- Conducts off‑school site visits to monitor students or confer with employers or site instructors as required.
- Supports or participates in school‑wide activities, social events, and approved fundraising activities.
- Monitors student behaviour in non‑instructional areas as assigned, intervening to control disruptive behaviour and reporting to administrators as appropriate.
- Collaborates with other professionals (guidance counselors, librarians, etc.) to carry out school‑wide instructional or related activities.
- May sponsor or coordinate extracurricular activities such as clubs, student organisations, and academic contests.
- Performs all activities in compliance with equal employment and non‑discrimination policies and follows federal, state, school board, and professional standards.

Minimum Salary: $60,662.00
- Valid educator licence in middle grades General Social Studies education OR eligibility for a conditional licence in middle grades General Social Studies (History major or at least 12 college credits in History with a C or better and an overall GPA of 2.5 or better).
