Position: Mathematics Coordinators (3 positions) (Education Program Specialist II)

Main Purpose of Job

These coordinator positions focus on supporting strategic statewide development of systems for implementation of mathematics instructional professional learning, tiered student intervention, and school improvement practices that improve student outcomes in mathematics. The Coordinator of Mathematics provides evidence‑based and highly effective program and initiative development and implementation leadership support aligned to the Maryland College and Career Ready Mathematics Standards to accelerate student achievement across local education agencies and early learning environments.

The position will work closely with LEA staff and early learning providers to build the capacity to develop, interpret, and implement best‑in‑class mathematics programs and initiatives, courses, instructional frameworks, curricula and assessments, and innovations to narrow and close opportunity and achievement gaps for historically disadvantaged students. The Coordinator of Mathematics will support the Director of Mathematics to develop, deploy and facilitate, and assess the effectiveness of ongoing, high‑quality professional learning and technical assistance provided by the Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE).

This position will also support MSDE’s collaboration efforts with diverse communities and organizations to develop, implement, and analyze programs and strategies to scale students’ participation in STEM‑aligned college and career readiness pathways.

Position Duties
  • Develops and implements evidence‑based mathematics programs and initiatives, professional learning, and technical assistance, and provides content expertise and stakeholder engagement to accelerate student achievement.
  • Facilitates the development and implementation of high‑quality and evidence‑based professional learning including year‑round in‑person sessions across the State within districts and school sites.
  • Provides leadership support, guidance, and direction to LEA staff, early learning providers, and other stakeholders aligned to best‑in‑class mathematics teaching and learning practices.
  • Supports the management of programs and initiatives and stakeholder work groups focused on ensuring equity and access to rigorous mathematics programs, pathways, and initiatives in Maryland schools, especially for historically underserved students.
  • Collaborates on development and integration of accessible resources such as instructional frameworks, curricula, assessments, and informational materials.
  • Represents MSDE at relevant local, State, and national meetings related to mathematics content‑specific programs and initiatives.
  • Supports the review and evaluation of high‑quality, culturally responsive instructional materials, assessments, and resources aligned to Maryland College and Career Readiness Standards for Mathematics.
  • Formats, revises, edits, prepares and updates mathematics standards and framework documents for publication and publishes related resources such as websites, playbooks, and informational materials.
  • Researches exemplary mathematics programs, resources, and instructional materials and supports continuous improvement of MSDE’s mathematics strategies and initiatives to accelerate student achievement.
  • Provides high‑quality, evidence‑based professional learning and leadership support for local education agencies and early learning providers to implement the Blueprint for Maryland’s Future and MSDE’s multiyear Strategic Plan priorities.
