Overview

APL Certified - Lead Teacher - Math - Grades 6-12 at Nexus Family Healing, Baltimore, MD. This position requires Maryland APL Certification for Middle and High School and involves providing math instruction within a trauma-informed educational setting.

Responsibilities
  • In cooperation with other members of the school team, assess educational needs and the progress of assigned students.
  • Provide instruction to assigned students in classes of expertise as assigned.
  • Prepare lesson plans suitable to the environment, age group and class mix on the assigned subject area(s).
  • Assist students individually where necessary; serve as a champion and advocate for each student taking a vested interest in the success of each student’s learning, and social and emotional growth.
  • Remain apprised of the latest and emerging teaching techniques to meet the needs of emotionally and behaviorally challenged students within a residential setting.
  • Provide assessments of progress toward academic goals.
  • Continually look for new approaches to instruction, class content and be responsive to students’ needs.
  • Collaborate with internal staff and communicate with students, coworkers, and leaders in a respectful and professional manner; lead by example in support of the Nexus mission, methods and values.
  • Provide crisis intervention within the classroom setting and apply TCI or approved de-escalation techniques as appropriate; ask for assistance when warranted and keep other academic and clinical treatment staff apprised of inappropriate behaviors.
  • Create a classroom climate that is positive and supportive for learning and treatment.
  • Establish and maintain appropriate relationships with students and emphasize student responsibility in the educational program.
  • Recognize student achievement and provide reinforcement, acknowledgement and recognition while redirection when needed; maintain appropriate boundaries.
  • Communicate students’ academic and behavioral successes and failures to fellow educational staff and treatment team staff.
  • Incorporate cultural diversity into all aspects of educational programming; attend trainings to be informed and respectful of other cultures.
  • Provide instructional support to other teachers.
  • Collaborate with Administration, instructional staff, and other school personnel to improve student outcomes and ensure data-informed instruction; oversee educational assessment and analysis of data to inform instruction.
  • Provide coaching, co-teaching, and hands-on support to teachers; model engaging, differentiated instruction and proactive classroom management techniques.
  • Collaborate with school administration to review lesson plans, develop and deliver professional development trainings, and ensure high-quality educational practices across the school.
  • In partnership with school administration, develop and monitor the student dashboard to track progress and support data-driven decision-making.
  • Ensure confidentiality regarding students is maintained in compliance with licensing, company policy, COA and HIPAA guidelines.
  • Develop or assist in developing IEPs, assess ability levels and coordinate meetings with other IEP team members where appropriate.
  • Attend faculty/staff meetings, IEP staffings, and participate in additional meetings and training sessions as required; support the Nexus treatment philosophy and modalities.
