OverviewWe are seeking a Mechanical Engineer to assist the Associate Director for Engineering and Utilities (ADEU) with design, planning, and operations for building systems and campus infrastructure, with a focus on energy efficiency and greenhouse gas reduction. The role supports projects across the historic JHU Homewood campus and additional locations, collaborating with Design & Construction, Facility Operations, Planning & Architecture, and the Office of Sustainability.
Responsibilities- Analyze existing building systems and recommend design improvements for heating, ventilation, air conditioning, plumbing, controls, and other mechanical components.
- Provide design guidance and technical recommendations during design and construction progress meetings to ensure compliance with university standards and contract conditions.
- Review and evaluate Capital Project designs, offering technical recommendations and supporting policy development for new construction and renovation projects.
- Participate in educational programs to promote awareness of building system issues within the JHFRE and university staff.
- Document and update design standards, monitoring their application and revising as necessary to maintain sustainability goals.
- Assist in construction oversight, including quality assurance, dispute resolution, and systems commissioning.
- Support the Office of Sustainability by evaluating energy strategies and contributing to climate change initiatives.
- Lead strategic technical planning in the context of the Capital Plan and regulatory requirements.
- Guide campus and building engineering efforts and manage development of Capital Project engineering standards.
- Provide technical assistance for sustainability initiatives.
- Work with limited supervision, making decisions and prioritizing on complex, problem‑solving operations.
- No direct staff supervision; impacts mechanical and electrical designs in capital projects.
- Exchange information with leadership, staff, peers, and vendors through effective oral and written skills, building collaborative relationships.
- Present complex material clearly to diverse audiences and communicate graphically through sketching, drafting, and markup.
- Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering or related field.
- Professional Engineer license in Maryland or reciprocal state preferred.
- Five years of building MEP systems engineering and design experience preferred.
- Experience with construction and renovation of various building types and sustainable concepts.
- Proficiency in MS Office, AutoCAD, and understanding of architectural and engineering drawings.
- Experience with BIM software and other graphics programs desirable.
- Additional education or experience may substitute for required items per JHU equivalency policy.

- Knowledge of HVAC, controls, plumbing, electrical, lighting, and low‑voltage systems.
- Knowledge of commissioning processes and mechanical system operation.
- Knowledge of sustainable concepts and greenhouse‑gas generation.
- Ability to develop accurate project cost budgets and reports using spreadsheets and databases.
- Adaptable to last‑minute changes and deliver complex materials accurately and timely.
- Remain stationary for extended periods.
- Climb ladders, navigate construction sites, and move around tight mechanical, electrical, and utility spaces.
- Operate computer and other equipment regularly.
Title:
Mechanical Engineer (ATP/04/PF) – Full Time, Exempt. Salary Range: $85,500 – $149,800 annually (commensurate with experience).
