Overview

The Assurance Manager is responsible for supervising, directing, and reviewing the results through the delegation of tasks throughout the planning, field work and “wrap-up” stages of an Audit client engagement. The role includes marketing, networking, and business development within an area of expertise, as well as ensuring engagement profitability involving billings and collections. Responsibilities include advising the client on economic and regulatory risks within their industry, resolving complex accounting issues, applying GAAP and GAAS consistently, writing technical consultation memos on GAAP / GAAS issues, and documenting, validating, testing, and assessing various financial reporting control systems.

Job Duties
  • Control Environment: Applies knowledge of factors affecting the effectiveness or mitigation of risks in policies and procedures; understands objectives and components of the control environment and supervisory controls; validates and assesses the effectiveness of internal control over financial reporting; identifies improvements for client internal controls and accounting procedures; delegates audit functions as appropriate; supervises the audit team and reviews work papers and conclusions onsite during field work;

    provides on-the-job training during audit field work.
  • GAAP: Applies knowledge of governing principles, documents understanding and application, consults with clients on the impact of new accounting pronouncements, communicates professional pronouncements, drafts complex financial statements and footnote disclosures, and resolves complex accounting issues with the help of technical experts as needed.
  • SEC and PCAOB: Applies SEC regulations and PCAOB guidelines; reviews SEC filings (MD&A, financial statements, disclosures) for form and content; ensures required communications to client and Audit Committee are complete and compliant; ensures 404 internal control audit work is complete and compliant; maintains engagement independence requirements.
  • GAAS: Applies professional standards and communicates understanding of GAAS; guides others and affirms conclusions; uses efficiency tools and communicates matters to the Audit Committee/Board; includes use of tools such as statistical sampling and CAATS where appropriate.
  • Methodology: Applies BDO standards to deliver quality services, conducts detailed reviews to ensure audits follow assurance manual standards, prepares communications to management and audit committees, initiates client acceptance/retention procedures, plans the audit process, oversees execution with quality and timeliness, and adheres to archiving procedures, considering Sarbanes-Oxley for combined 404 and financial statement audits for public clients.
  • Research: Applies research methodologies to seek information from authoritative sources, defines methodologies for research projects, uses appropriate tools, prepares memos supporting conclusions, and presents issues effectively for review.
  • Supervisory Responsibilities: Supervises Associates and Senior Associates, provides review comments, acts as a career advisor, schedules and manages workload, provides performance feedback, and coaches staff for on-the-job learning.
  • Education & Experience: Bachelor’s degree required (Accounting/Finance/Economics/Statistics preferred);
    Master’s in Accountancy preferred; five or more years of relevant audit experience; prior supervisory experience; industry expertise in one or more assurance specialties preferred; active US CPA license required (or international equivalent with plan to obtain US CPA). Familiarity with SEC and PCAOB rules; strong verbal and written communication; client development/relationship-building skills; ability to manage engagement profitability including billings and collections.
  • Technology & Other

    Skills:

    Proficient with Microsoft Office; experience with assurance applications and research tools preferred; solid GAAP/GAAS knowledge; ability to resolve complex accounting issues; ability to be primary client contact and to present to clients and potential clients.
