The Alliance for American Leadership (A4AL) is a bipartisan coalition of foreign policy experts and young professionals committed to restoring American credibility and effectiveness abroad through smart, life‑saving investments. We are currently seeking a Deputy Chief of Staff to provide administrative and research support across multiple teams as they engage in congressional outreach, policy strategy, and public affairs work. This is a clerical‑facing position ideal for someone interested in the nuts and bolts of legislative advocacy and seeking exposure to how a mission‑driven organization supports its government relations work behind the scenes.
ResponsibilitiesThe Chief of Staff will assist our Executive Director in managing an all‑volunteer organization of over 1000 people across all 50 states. Responsibilities include hiring new team members, helping manage team meetings, maintaining internal tracking systems for congressional engagement, including logs of outreach, meetings, and follow‑up, formatting and proofreading memos and coordinating internal document storage to ensure consistency and accessibility. Willingness to engage with staff and interns on a regular basis to ensure staff retention and organizational success.
Coordinating both internal projects and national campaigns. Running parallel tracks of program design, political strategy, and operational execution, blending policy innovation, program development, and streamlining processes. Recruiting, briefing, coordinating, and activating multiple high‑level committees, shaping their agendas and outputs. Staffing, hiring, internal systems, external partnerships, policy drafting, campus programming, national events, fundraising strategy, and executive advising in a vastly expanded scope compared to standard Cos roles, functioning as both Chief Operating Officer and Chief Strategist.
We are looking for candidates who are reliable, detail‑oriented, and organized, with strong written communication skills—at least 5 years of professional experience is required. Must thrive in a fast‑paced environment. Experience with start‑ups, previous political experience, and rapidly scaling projects and processes from 0‑1 necessary. Must have previous experience with program management. Successful candidates must have a high degree of professionalism and comfort speaking and working with a wide range of stakeholders, from top ranking government and military officials to college students.
Ideal candidates will have a willingness to mentor and train college students and recent graduates and the ability to thrive in a high‑stress environment, with a positive attitude. This role requires candidates to think outside of the box to deploy novel solutions during periods of rapid scaling.
