Under direct supervision, the Phlebotomy Lab Assistant provides phlebotomy/accessioning service, utilizes appropriate equipment to collect, receive, accession, and process pathology and laboratory specimens, and provides laboratory information and reports to customers. The assistant assists in the training and monitoring of co‑workers, students, and other hospital staff.

6 months of related phlebotomy experience or 6 months related laboratory accessioning experience.

Principal Duties And Responsibilities
  • Extract blood from patients and perform all phlebotomy procedures, including children and infants, according to established aseptic venipuncture technique.
  • Maintain detailed documentation for all phlebotomy rounds.
  • Maintain detailed documentation of outpatients that are called back to include physicians’ offices.
  • Enter accurate and complete patient demographic information, laboratory test orders, and verify collection/receipt of specimens for completeness and accuracy.
  • Prepare and process specimens for testing in the clinical laboratory, including labeling, measuring, aliquoting, centrifuging, and the like, and distribute specimens appropriately.
  • Perform quality EKGs and complete all required demographic information.
  • Screen and interview autologous and therapeutic donors according to protocol accurately and completely, completing all donor room QC daily; universal precautions are followed.
  • Complete all donor documentation accurately and on time.
  • Complete associated responsibilities such as centrifuge maintenance, label maintenance, disinfection of counters, filing and boxing requisitions; stock and maintain supplies.
  • Check all outpatient orders for accuracy and match requisition to Meditech orders and labels.
  • Ensure all statistics are responded to in a timely manner.
  • Execute Quest and Sheppard Pratt registrations accurately.
  • Actively participate in the laboratory’s continuing education program and meet requirements as described in the policy, sharing knowledge through formal and informal presentations.
  • Ensure patient safety by following procedure for patient identification; always use two patient identifiers and double‑check specimens against orders entered in Meditech.
  • Package and transport all specimens according to policy and procedures.
  • Ensure that all specimens are sent to lab in a timely manner.
