Overview

Assistant or Associate Professor (FRIS # ):
The Department of Radiation Oncology, at the University of Maryland School of Medicine is recruiting for a faculty Medical Physicist at the Assistant / Associate Professor, non-tenure track level at our community-based practice; the University of Maryland Shore Regional Medical Center (UM-SRMC). Candidates must have a Ph.D. in medical physics, engineering, or related physical science and A  board certification/eligibility in radiation oncology physics.

Expected rank for this position will be Assistant Professor or higher; however, final rank and tenure status will be commensurate with selected candidate's experience.

Responsibilities
  • Perform clinical duties including quality assurance, machine maintenance and calibration, patient treatment planning and treatment support, and technology/workflow optimization and implementation.
  • Teach residents/trainees and actively engage in clinical innovation and translation.
Practice and Facilities

The successful candidate will join our existing Medical Physics team and work at the Cancer Center at UM-SRMC, located in Easton, Maryland. The UM-SRMC Radiation Oncology Center is equipped with two linear accelerator radiation treatment machines (Varian True Beam), a High Dose Radiation (HDR) Unit (Varian BRAVOS system), and one Siemens CT simulator (SOMATOM go.

Open Pro). The department provides a full range of clinical services, including proton therapy, stereotactic radiosurgery/radiotherapy, brachytherapy (low- and high-dose), and thermal therapy (hyperthermia). A telemedicine network connects practice sites for frequent interactions, and there is access to clinical PET/CT and MR scanners. The department also has dedicated research space co-located with precision radiotherapy and radio biology research to facilitate interdisciplinary collaboration.

Campus-wide shared resources include small-animal imaging CT, PET, and MR scanners.

Team and Research

The Medical Physics team is led by Dr. Amit Sawant, Vice Chair for Medical Physics, and comprises 31 medical physics faculty, 25 dosimetrists, 3 physics residents, and 7 information systems and technology staff. Research programs include advanced treatment planning and delivery techniques, real-time respiratory motion management, functionally-guided radiation therapy, prompt-gamma imaging, dual-energy CT, AI applications in radiation therapy (including radiomics and radio genomics), and electron and proton FLASH radiotherapy.

Medical physics research space is co-located with precision radiotherapy and radio biology research to facilitate collaboration.

Salary and Benefits

The anticipated salary for this position is $176,000-$316,000 dependent upon experience. The salary range reflects base pay and rank-related factors; actual compensation may vary based on multiple factors, including skills, experience, internal equity, and market conditions. The University reserves the right to modify compensation at any time.

Qualifications

Candidates must have a PhD in medical physics, engineering, or related physical science and A  board certification/eligibility in radiation oncology physics.
