HPC Systems Administrator (IT@JH Research Computing)
The Johns Hopkins University seeks an HPC Systems Administrator to support the daily operation of the university’s high‑performance computing and AI environments.
Specific Duties & Responsibilities- Monitor basic system health and resolve tickets.
- Assist with user account administration, including account maintenance and authorizations.
- Install software updates, configure node settings, and participate in infrastructure projects under senior staff guidance.
- Perform routine maintenance, backups, and archive operations.
- Develop basic scripts and solutions to automate systems management.
- Monitor, tune, and troubleshoot system performance using appropriate tools.
- Participate in project collaboration and change management, ensuring documentation and testing of changes.
- Design simple solutions by meeting with customers and documenting findings.
- Conform to institutional policies, standards, and guidelines, and vendor best practices.
- Participate in selecting infrastructure applications, working with vendors and other sources.
- Install and configure server hardware and operating systems following documentation.
- Evaluate and implement appropriate software and hardware solutions to maintain integrity.
- Implement backup schedules and archive operations.
- Provide basic server level administration, including maintenance, upgrades, patches, account maintenance, and backups.
- Monitor and tune systems for optimum performance.
- Develop scripts to automate management tasks.
- Execute system software upgrades and coordinate them with documentation and standards.
- Audit user access and generate periodic reports on performance, integrity, and capacity.
- Use management and monitoring tools to detect incidents, determine root cause, and resolve routine incidents.
- Implement changes within change management policies.
- Participate in evaluating vendor proposals and selecting vendors.
- Work with vendors, consultants, and internal groups to develop applications.
- Attend project meetings and provide input.
- Create and maintain documentation and test scenarios.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- Bachelor’s Degree.
- One year of related experience or equivalent education.
- One to three years of experience administering Linux systems.
- Basic familiarity with HPC concepts such as cluster scheduling, shared file systems, high‑speed networking.
- Understanding of Linux tools and workflows (package management, system logs, permissions, service management).
- Introductory scripting experience (Bash or Python).
- Familiarity with configuration management tools (Ansible, Puppet).
- Familiarity with networking fundamentals (TCP/IP, DNS, SSH) and authentication technologies (LDAP, Active Directory).
- Strong communication skills and documentation ability.
- Demonstrated eagerness to learn and contribute to a collaborative team.
