ASL Interpreter & Team Lead (Department of Cognitive Science)

The Johns Hopkins University seeks a full‑time, nationally certified ASL Interpreter & Team Lead. This position serves as a designated interpreter for a faculty member in the Department of Cognitive Science, providing daily transliterating services and supporting a team of interpreters. Additional responsibilities include recruiting, supervising staff interpreters, managing agency contracts, and anticipating the faculty member’s interpretation needs.

Responsibilities
  • Provide sign language/English transliterating for on‑demand and regularly scheduled meetings, talks, classes, and other functions.
  • Offer flexibility in scheduling, accommodating occasional evenings and weekends.
  • Communicate with faculty, staff, and students to obtain preparation materials and share them with team interpreters.
  • Stay abreast of best practices in interpreting services and resources.
  • Adhere to the NAD‑RID Code of Professional Conduct.
  • Recruit, hire, supervise, and schedule interpreters as needed for classes, meetings, or university events.
  • Support development and maintenance of a highly qualified pool of interpreters through training and mentoring.
  • Provide feedback on interpreter skill levels and recommend assignments.
  • Maintain HR‑related and scheduling records for staff interpreters.
  • Perform interpreter payroll evaluations and reporting, including timekeeping and payroll input for hourly interpreters.
  • Facilitate access to university services and resources for interpreters.
  • Vet interpreting agencies that can meet specialized needs; secure contracts per JHU purchasing policies.
  • Maintain records on agency interpreter skillsets and schedules; reconcile and submit invoices for payment.
  • Coordinate accommodations on behalf of faculty to remove potential communication obstacles.
  • Perform other related work as needed.
  • Work independently with minimal supervision; make sound decisions and judgment daily.
Required Skills and Experience
  • Graduate‑degree‑level knowledge of psycholinguistics, linguistics, cognitive science, computer science, or related field.
  • Demonstrated ethics training and confidentiality maintenance.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Experience interpreting in rigorous, fast‑paced academic environments.
  • Ability to accomplish detailed organizational tasks within established deadlines.
  • Basic computer skills and proficiency.
  • Independent and collaborative work skills.
  • Current national ASL/English interpreter certification.
  • RID membership and at least one affiliate chapter.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's Degree in a related field.
  • Fluency in American Sign Language (ASL) and English.
  • Four years of related interpreting experience, preferably in post‑secondary settings.
  • Additional experience may substitute for required education in line with JHU equivalency formula.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Eight or more years of interpreting experience in post‑secondary settings.
  • Experience in professional development and mentoring of interpreters.
  • Graduate degree in Psycholinguistics, Linguistics, Cognitive Science, Computer Science, or related field.
