Payroll Manager – Med Star Health
Med Star Health is seeking a Payroll Manager to oversee payroll processing for a large, dynamic workforce of 35,000+ associates. The position requires a leader who can ensure accuracy, compliance, and operational excellence in a collaborative, fast‑paced environment.
Location:
Within driving distance to White Marsh, Maryland (possible on‑site requirements).
- Develop department goals, objectives, policies and procedures, ensuring compliance with business unit and governmental regulations.
- Develop and recommend the operating budget, manage resources within the approved budget.
- Select, train, orient, and assign staff; develop performance standards, evaluate performance, and conduct performance management planning.
- Maintain ongoing communication with subordinates to review programs, provide feedback, and discuss new developments.
- Adhere to and ensure compliance with department policies, quality and safety standards.
- Assist Payroll Director in developing the Payroll Department budget; partial budget responsibility for the area supervised.
- Collaborate with General Accounting, Accounts Payable, Human Resources, ERP and Benefits staff on problem resolution and reporting.
- Collaborate with other Payroll leadership to foster a culture that embraces the Med Star SPIRIT Values.
- Continuously evaluate Payroll processes and recommend improvements to support a High Reliability Organization (HRO).
- Develop and execute plans related to departmental goals and process improvements, providing leadership to project team members.
- Identify training requirements and opportunities, ensuring timely execution within financial constraints.
- Lead processing of special payment requests (manual checks, adjustments, settlements, grievance payments, garnishments) and review approvals.
- Manage day‑to‑day activities of Payroll Processing staff and perform personnel administration, including staff selection and goal setting.
- Participate in meetings, committees, community outreach, and multidisciplinary quality improvement teams, maintaining relationships with other departments.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- Proven experience managing large payroll teams.
- Strong knowledge of People Soft (preferred).
- Healthcare industry experience (preferred).
- Ability to thrive in a collaborative, fast‑paced environment while implementing process improvement initiatives.
- Located within driving distance to White Marsh, Maryland.
- Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration, Accounting, or equivalent job experience.
- 10+ years payroll experience utilizing an automated payroll system; able to plan and execute projects independently.
- 7 years of supervisory experience (preferred).
- CPP preferred or FPC designation preferred.
- Ability to analyze, resolve, document, and communicate complex payroll processes and problems.
- Demonstrated team leadership fostering exemplary service and support to customers.
- Ability to collaborate with all levels of management and external agencies.
- Strong working knowledge of Payroll, Payroll Tax, Microsoft Suite, and People Soft (preferred).
- Time‑keeping systems experience preferred.
- Excellent verbal, written communication, and problem‑resolution skills.
USD $95,014.00 – USD $ per year.
