We are seeking an Animal Care Assistant Manager who will ensure animal husbandry in all assigned animal facilities at Johns Hopkins University and Medical Institutions is performed in a manner compatible with all humane, legal, and scientific requirements.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities
  • Ensure that preventive maintenance is adequately performed according to schedule and that all records pertaining to equipment are documented and stored.
  • Ensure the efficient implementation of the facility's day-to-day processes to comply with AAALAC and institutional guidelines.
  • Provide oversight of all operations related to the husbandry and care of animals.
  • Under the guidance of the Director, maintain the animal facility to meet the standards of the U.S. Department of Agriculture Animal Welfare Act, the Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals, and other state, federal and local animal welfare laws and regulations, and internal Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
  • Oversee all required animal care and general facilities supplies, including animal feed, bedding, PPE, cleaning products, parts, and hardware for facilities maintenance projects and repairs and that they are ordered in a timely fashion with sufficient inventory.
  • In consultation with the Director, write, review, and edit SOPs, guidelines, and other internal documents. Oversee their implementation.
  • Make recommendations for capital equipment purchases and repairs.
  • Provides reports and analysis of husbandry and cage washing activities to the Director.
Staff Supervision and Training
  • Assist in hiring, training, managing, and disciplining husbandry staff and will hire, train, and manage Animal Care Supervisors. This responsibility includes coordination with Human Resources and Union representatives when appropriate. At times this may also include testifying at Unemployment Compensation Claims hearings.
  • Oversee the performance of assigned staff, including area supervisors and other direct reports.
  • Ensure tasks are completed effectively and safely and that all staff are productive, develop professionally, and follow SOPs.
  • Conduct on-the-job training and orientation for new staff and continually evaluate staff performance.
  • Take corrective action if SOPs are not being followed.
  • Plan, develop and implement staffing daily schedules to ensure staff coverage, including on holidays and weekends.
  • Delegate responsibilities and duties as appropriate.
  • Maintain regular communication with direct reports as well as faculty, staff, and trainees.
  • Suggest changes to improve the efficiency and quality of animal care and the evaluation of processes and products.
  • Identify problems and develop and implement solutions in collaboration with the Director.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Technical Qualifications Or Specialized Certifications
  • Certification by the American Association of Laboratory Animal Science at the LAT level required. Certification at the LAGT is preferred.
  • Basic computer skills (i.e. familiarity with Microsoft Office applications including Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint) is required; familiarity with electronic health record systems is preferred.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's Degree in Biology, Animal Husbandry or related field.
  • Three years of progressively responsible experience working in an animal facility.
  • Additional education may substitute for required experience and additional related experience may substitute for required education beyond a high school diploma/graduation equivalent, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Five years of experience in laboratory animal field.
