Role OverviewAs the Chief Engineer
, you will oversee and manage all aspects of the maintenance department, including equipment maintenance, building and grounds upkeep, parts purchasing and inventory, maintenance budgets, capital project management, mechanic training and development, hiring, scheduling, follow‑up inspections, predictive and preventative maintenance program management, and serving as the interdepartmental director of engineering. Chief Engineers report directly to the plant manager and indirectly to corporate communications.
- Follow up on preventative maintenance, work orders, and emergency repairs to ensure they are being done correctly.
- Work closely with production to meet their needs.
- Co‑ordinate with sanitation to schedule effective shutdowns for both departments.
- Plan work during normal shutdowns.
- Organize and maintain parts inventory and oversee all maintenance purchasing and contractors.
- Hire maintenance mechanics.
- Develop maintenance personnel individually to improve and grow their careers.
- Facilitate training programs for all maintenance employees.
- Troubleshoot and repair mechanical, hydraulic, pneumatic, and electrical systems.
- Manage food safety requirements related to maintenance.
- Follow up on all safety programs and related training.
- Work in a fast‑paced, primarily hands‑on environment.
- Participate in staff meetings, operations shift meetings, and safety/food safety meetings and inspections as needed.
- Be available on call during off hours for troubleshooting remote and on‑site as necessary.
- Minimum of five years experience as a maintenance mechanic.
- High school diploma, GED, or equivalent.
- Experience in the food industry, preferably baking.
- Skills with mixers, dough handling equipment, ovens, cooling systems, packaging equipment, refrigeration systems, conveyor systems, HVAC systems, CMMS software, and diagnostic tools.
- Strong leadership qualities.
- Strong mechanical skills.
- Strong electrical troubleshooting ability.
- Willingness and availability to work different shifts, weekends, and holidays as needed.
Physical Requirements
Stand and/or walk for extended periods; lift and carry up to 50 pounds; reach, bend, stoop, and crouch to access equipment; use arms, hands, and fingers to operate machinery, tools, or controls.
