Biohabitats is seeking an Arborist/Restoration Ecologist with a minimum of five years’ experience in the Eastern Temperate Forest Ecoregion to join our growing team.

The ideal candidate will have training and practical experience in forest ecology with an understanding of arboricultural practices and strong tree identification skills. The candidate should also demonstrate a general understanding of and experience with core disciplines relevant to the assessment and restoration of inland and coastal wetlands, riparian systems, and grasslands and meadows within the diverse ecosystems of the mid-Atlantic and southeastern states.

The successful candidate will work with our multidisciplinary team of scientists, engineers, and landscape architects to support biodiversity restoration, climate change adaptation, environmental justice and green infrastructure work for government, private and non-governmental organizations.

Role and Responsibilities

Perform forest characterizations and conditions assessments, tree risk assessments, ecological field studies, and reporting for a variety of ecosystem projects.

Support all aspects of ecological restoration project delivery including planning, assessments, design, permitting, construction oversight, and monitoring.

Compile project findings (e.g. forest and habitat condition, priority conservation areas, soil health, model results, stakeholder surveys, mapping, survey, etc.) into cohesive and comprehensive deliverables (e.g. reports, management plans, renderings, contract drawings and specifications, cost estimates, etc.).

Review project deliverables for compliance with local, state, and federal regulations and adherence to local and regional planning objectives.

Participate in client meetings, community and stakeholder engagements, and industry events.

Required Skills, Experience, and Knowledge

Demonstrated academic and professional experience in forest ecology, field and desktop ecological assessment, and flora and fauna identification in the mid-Atlantic and southeastern U.S.

Understanding of common and emerging threats to Eastern Temperate Forests and ability to recognize field indicators of these threats (e.g., pests, diseases, deer pressure).

Understanding of the biological and physical processes that drive ecosystem functions and a foundation of conservation planning and ecological design principles such as forest and wetland science, river and stream dynamics, coastal resilience, landscape design, nature-based design, green infrastructure, and/or climate adaptations.

Understanding of the regulatory frameworks for ecological restoration projects.

Strong written and oral communication skills.

Ability to work both independently and in a collaborative, team environment.

Willingness to travel to the Great Lakes, Southeast, and Hudson River Bioregions.

Preferred Skills, Experience, and Knowledge

Experience with geographic information systems (e.g., ArcGIS).

Restoration construction, plant installation, and non-native invasive species control oversight experience.

Experience in the preparation of construction specifications and cost estimates.

Society of American Forester (SAF) Certified Forester.

International Society of Arboriculture (ISA) Tree Risk Assessment Qualification (TRAQ).

Experience in community engagement.

Working understanding of hydrologic and hydraulic principles.
