Position Summary

We are seeking a compassionate, detail-oriented Veterinary Surgery Assistant/Technician to join our high-volume Spay/Neuter Clinic team. In this vital role, you will assist with surgical procedures, provide daily care for patients before and after surgery, and help maintain a clean and efficient clinical environment. You will also support customer service and administrative tasks. This is an excellent opportunity to make a meaningful impact on animal welfare in a collaborative, fast-paced setting.

This is a weekday-only position—no weekends required

Essential Duties and Responsibilities Surgical & Patient Care
  • Prepare surgery room and animals for procedures, including pre-medicating, shaving, scrubbing, and intubating.
  • Assist veterinarians during surgery with patient restraint and technical support.
  • Maintain efficient and safe surgical flow.
  • Monitor patients under anesthesia and during recovery, reporting any abnormal signs.
  • Administer anesthetics, analgesics, medications, and vaccines per protocol.
  • Perform dental cleanings and collect blood/fecal samples for testing.
  • Maintain detailed and accurate medical records, including controlled substance logs.
  • Client service & administrative support as needed.
Animal Handling
  • Safely handle 25–35 cats and dogs per day, using appropriate restraint techniques.
  • Identify and respond appropriately to fearful, aggressive, or feral behavior.
  • Use personal protective equipment (PPE) and tools for handling fractious animals.
  • Know your limits and request assistance when needed.
Facility & Equipment Maintenance
  • Clean and disinfect surgical and recovery areas between procedures.
  • Sterilize instruments and maintain all surgical equipment.
  • Monitor inventory of medical supplies.
Qualifications
  • High School diploma or GED required.
  • Veterinary Technician Certification (Preferred).
  • Minimum 2 years of experience in a veterinary clinic, hospital, or shelter setting.
  • Proficient in safe animal handling, venipuncture, and administering medications (IV, IM, SQ).
  • Knowledge of spay/neuter surgical procedures and anesthesia protocols preferred.
  • Ability to multitask and remain organized in a fast-paced environment.
  • Strong attention to detail and situational awareness.
  • Motivated self-starter with a professional, team-oriented attitude.
Physical Demands
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 50 lbs.
  • Stand/walk for 8+ hours/day with frequent bending, kneeling, and reaching.
  • Good eyesight and hearing, including the ability to detect subtle changes in animal behavior or vocalization.
  • Comfortable working in confined spaces and under physically demanding conditions.
  • Excellent reflexes and hand-eye coordination.
Working Conditions
  • Work performed in a shelter clinic setting.
  • Regular exposure to animals, animal waste, disinfectants, and zoonotic diseases.
  • Risk of bites or scratches from fearful or aggressive animals.
  • Frequent use of cleaning chemicals and prolonged exposure to aqueous solutions and isoflurane gas.
  • Noise level is moderate.
